Just got my High Country Gardens catalog and they are selling clematis scotti in case anyone is interested. This is the same company that I ordered my two clematis hirsutissimas from last year and they sold out quickly.

Scotti is very easy from seed. Sometimes you will have flowers in the first year.

Ton or anyone with experience with scottii, how would you compare the culture of scottii versus hirsutissima? Which is more finicky about its growing medium, water requirements, overall vigor, etc? Thanks for any help.

Hirsutissima is as germination and the first 1/2 year easy but after this period rather difficult. See the conditions in the wild. Hirsutissima needs a special soil and rather dry during Summer. I have had several scottii's with flowers and only one Hirsutissima because our summers are rather wet.

Thanks Ton. I have two hirsutissimas. One is potted up with a japanese maple under the overhang on the back patio. That one only gets watered when I water it and the tree unless the rain blows sideways. The other is in a pot that I have brought into the garage for the winter. The plant thinks it is spring and has already come back up! I have two scottis on order. The information on the website said that scottis can take full sun when adequately irrigated and in partial sun it rarely needs water.

My first seeds of scottii, hirsutissima and fremontii I have got them for seeds of Lapageria rosea from someone in the States. I have forgotten the name. Now I have my own seeds of hirsutissima and fremontii. Both germinate rather easy.
