I agree, I love their sound. You never doubt they are in the area when you hear that call. Sometimes we have thousands of them here in the reeds and fields, but right now only a few.

Even in the snowy depths up on Huckleberry Mountain, the redwing blackbirds return at the end of February, which is very early. The snow doesn't disappear there until sometime in April, though there are sometimes bare patches in late March. It's so nice to see a picture of the blackbirds now. Winter is just beginning, I'm afraid. The old saying goes, "When the days begin to lengthen, the cold begins to strengthen." I always hope that's not true, just as I always hope the January thaw is the beginning of spring, but I am always disappointed. I guess I'll just have to start planning a Groundhog Day party to cheer myself up.
