I mentioned to a sometimes-crazy, sometimes-brilliant east coast relative that we are in a drought emergency and probably will be for the rest of the year. He suggested siphoning off used water from the washing machine to water plants this summer. Is this advice crazy or brilliant? Won't the detergent be bad for them?

Nope. Not at all bad advice. I've used bath water, sink water...all sorts of stuff. I also have 4 rain barrels to collect water. And reducing the amount of soaps you use isn't a bad idea anyway.

Thank you! Now I just have to figure out how to rig it. I've also bought a rain barrel. And since I posted this query it has rained here almost nonstop. Weird.
