I would put in some flowering shrubs that will take shade.

Shelia, it does not look all that shady to me, what exposure is it? If it really is shade go into the shade forum and you will come up with great ideas. I hope Sue won't mind me linking her garden, but she is also a CT gardener and her gardens are full of ideas. If your site is truly not shady, give us some more info.

I can see a curved bed..and perhaps a standard miniature tree to the right like a standard Pink Diamond hydrangea or PeeGee etc.. if indeed it is shady ..and you could have some lovely Bleeding Hearts, Ferns, Hostas..Solomon's Seal towards the back.. so many things do well in part shde..I bought Brunerra JackFrost and the foliage and blooms are so pretty in the shade. How fun to get a makeover..The style of your home/neigbhbourhood is similar to parts of our neighbourhood and they are packed with charm..Cottage Garden look would be very nice IMHO.
