Well I thought you meant plants with seedpods that explode, catapulting their seeds far and wide. Like impatiens. But I'm not disappointed!

That Orostachys is a favorite of mine. It forms very large tight mats and has the most interesting bloom form in fall. A perfect rock garden specimen. Great shots too.

Awesome! What a great series of photos. Here's my contribution - a sempervivum that flowered last year. This one was amazing as the flower was fasciated.

Great shots Mike. I like the saxifraga. Sorry I couldn't tell you what it is..It's cool the way the stems come up like that. what color are the flowers?

It was a new addition last summer, so I don't know, but probably pink. I'll find out soon.

I love the Orostachys - I must create a situation for it, and get one! And it does look like it has exploded :)

Now that they've exploded, I need to correct their nomenclature. This one is actually Dianthus arvernensis:
And this one is (found the tag) Saxifraga umbrosa-primuloides ‘Dwarf London Pride’:

I love your rock garden plants, Mike. Rock gardening was my first gardening love--30+ years ago. But I never did it correctly so my results were always disappointing. What can I say--I was young and stupid!

Thanks both for your comments. Rock gardens allow very small plants in my very small garden, forcing me to really slow down and notice things.

Mike, are ants ever a problem for your plants? I've had just common ants almost completely cover my plants with their 'house' building. :(

Oh, yes. I live less than a mile from Lake Michigan, and everything here is sand. But so far the layer of pebbles on the rock garden has stopped them, I think. They'd rather dig into the sand/limestone grit I laid the brick path on. I'm sure it will all cave in within a few years, entirely hollow from many the many ant condos underneath. And all those aphids they farm about!
