I have a jackmani clematis about 5 years old on the west side of my house. It is shaded in the AM but gets sun until late in the afternoon. I placed some rocks about the base when it was young and planted a mounding perennial, (the name escapes me at the moment) at the clematis' base to keep its "feet" cool. It has never done very well and last fall in frustration I pruned it back severely. It came back this spring but is once more curling back on itself rather than climbing the trellis I have provided. It is dry there under the eaves so maybe I am just not getting enough water to it. It gets about 6 ft tall but is always curling back rather than climbing. Does anyone else have any ideas?Northernlight- wisconsin, Zone "4"
