There are two perennials, blooming now in my garden, which seem to have exchanged their foliage !
I mean, the usual foliage of the family of one plant usually looks more like the foliage of the other !
Will you recognize them ?
Plant n° 1 :

Plant n° 2 :

Once you have, I will show you the whole plant, of course !

Your plants always seem to be playing tricks. I really don't know, so here are my wild guesses
The first one is a very filigree Geranium pratense, the second is an Astrantia that is developing antlers.
Sorry, I really haven't got a clue.

no, no, no, dear Mara...
No geranium here...no astrantia either...
Maybe I didn't write it properly...
I mean, these plants are "normal" for their kind , those in my garden are not behaving strangely at all !
It's just that this specific plant in the family, has unusual leaves...for this given family...
Try again? lol...

Congratulations, Mike ! Don't underestimate your skills, my friend ! Yes, there is a delphinium here...but no geranium..You have half of the answer ! Go on...
Which of the two plants is a delphinium, in your mind?
And what is the other one?

More wild guessing. Then the first picture is a delphinium (probably an annual). And the second picture is... something that usually has finely divided leaves, and this variety doesn't
No, I have no gift for this either.

Mara, I'm sorry !But you picked the wrong picture !
It's the second picture which is a delphinium, lol !!!
Delphinium 'Alice Artindale', actually !

And the first picture, with a delphinium-like foliage, is neither a delphinium, nor a geranium !
The more common plants of this family usually bloom later in the summer/autumn, and their leaves are somehow more like the bottom leaves of Alice, but a darker, glossy green....
Though some other - earlier- representatives of this family have divided leaves too, not as divided as my plant-n°1, but fairly divided too !
Don't give up! You do know it ! A well known family ! It has been known for thousand years, I believe, for a special, not so recommendable, reason ....

I like that delphinium! Very interesting. Now, how about aconitum? Glossy green, late blooming, known for centuries because of its poisonous properties?

Mike, congratulations again !
Yes, it is an aconitum...
I found this particular one in a private garden in Normandy last year. From my investigations, it should be an english native called Aconitum Anglicum, or Aconitum napellus ssp anglicum (?).
Its leaves are particularly divided, and it starts blooming at the end of may, which is earlier than most, if not all other aconitums, from what I know...
It makes lovely high blue clumps (about 3' tall), and could well replace delphiniums for people who don't succeed with them ! And it doesn't need any staking ! Isn't that a bonus?

Well, I had found that its leaves definitely looked like delphinium leaves, and that Alice Artindale's leaves made me think of aconitum carmichaeli...don't you agree?
Maybe it was just the result of a too imaginative, or too crooked, french mind ? ;o))
Hope you enjoyed the game, however...

Delightful plant, that monkshood. Not hardy in my zone, but you're right, they do resemble the others' family!
