I wanted to post this - because it is a favourite of mine, "amsonia". It is not eye capturing in a pot - in fact it looks quite pathetic. It is about three feet + tall - is drought resistant - likes full sun. It has never flopped here and is reliably hardy to zone 4. In a light breeze I think it is one of the most graceful perennials - has no pests that I know of. When it has finished blooming - it still stays neat and tidy. I let it self-seed this year and have given some away and will start another clump for myself - maintenance level O. I hope I can encourage others to try it. If you have some experience with this one - please share - maybe it is not as garden worthy in your location.
I love this iris - a good thing since I waited three years for it to bloom. "Crimson Snow". I got mine through mail order at "Botanus". Last year I got hit by the iris borer and lost many of my favourites. I am so pleased that this survived. I am slowly rebuilding colonies of the ones I like. The little pink "bunny tails" in the pic are polygonium (sp?)bisorta superbaum. They look awesome underplanted with allium "Christophi".
Last is peony "Coral n' Gold". I bought it last year on my annual plant pilgrimage with my garden friends. Three buds this year - were a welcomed sight. Can't wait til it becomes a small shrub. This years buds are confirmation that I have not planted it too deep. I should have a nice plant in a couple of years.
Today was the 2005 "plant extravaganza". Came home with a few more treasures. I was very discriminating - OK I have run out of space here :)

Small world, I have been given amsonia by a friend just last week. It is a small start. The picture is of her plants. I also just ordered, yesterday, crimson snow iris.

Very lovely, Ladies! What a very beautiful Iris, Kim! You have so much blooming there. My peonies are still in buds, not a flower to be seen yet on it. But when they bloom, the should be spectacular! I anxiously await their beautiful blooms. I pray that the rains will not ruin them before I can enjoy them. We are expecting some pretty heavy rainfall in the next few days.

The amsonia is not a plant I'm familiar with so thanks for the introduction - it's lovely.

I really must add Amsonia to my garden. I've admired it at the nursery many times, and seeing your photos of mature clumps really makes me want one. Here's a photo I took of the flowers a couple of years ago at the nursery.

If have an Amsonia also which is not nearly as large as yours yet. Shade tends to be a bit of a problem here. The iris is wonderful!

Amsonia tabernaemontana is what you have there, sometimes called blue star willow, I love it for its non-floppy shrubby shape and its golden fall color. For a real blazing-yellow fall color, though, try A. hubrechtii, which has finer foliage, smaller, almost insignificant blue flowers, but lights up like a dying star when autumn comes around.
