Well, my mom said you guys were much friendlier than the GardenWeb people, so I thought I'd take her advice and join. Plus, now I can gloat all anew about what I have done (As opposed to what I should have done). Since my landlady decided to triple the size of my back yard by getting rid of the gravel parking spot and replacing it with soil (decision in mid May), I've been working hard - and not on my thesis writing which I really should do, but gardening. BEFORE... 13 May DURING... 27 May AFTER... 1 June I've been working on the garden because it was supposed to be rainy and cool for the next week and I had to put a bunch of grass seed down. So what I did this week was... took down a weed tree (manitoba maple)... planted an apple tree... took out an old cement sidewalk t hat went through the middle of the lawn... build a fence... move a TRUCKLOAD of topsoil... take down an old fence (and take all the nails out and stack it nicely to be reuse the wood at a later date for something else)... move the composter and all it's entrails... builkd a trellis out of old fence materials including nails... move a tree's worth of wood - one that was cut down last week to the shed so that it dries out nicely... plant a bunch of things (veggies and herbs: beans, zucchini, carrots, spinach, swiss chard, jalapenos, banana peppers, sage, mint, basil; flowers: poppies, lupins (for Remus), climbing nasturtiums, foxgloves, columbine, sunflowers, a clematis vine, and a patch of native meadow (my mom calls them weeds!); trees and shrubs: 3 holly bushes, 1 saskatoon, 1 buning bush, 1 himalayan potentilla, and of course the grass seed). I did all this in a period of.. 36 hours. I was rather tired and sore but I'm almost done. In fact, it felt really good because it's been so long that I spent a day solely doing physical labour. My arms and shoulders feel tingly and I feel like I could take on the world! I just have some iris, spuds and a squash left to plant. The downstairs tenant's cat decided that my soil is a huge, beautiful catbox... blasted fat cat. As you can see in the last picture, the fence is not done - the back left still needs to be built around a cement pad for garbage cans... That will be done as soon as the landlady's son-in-law has time. Hmmm... it's been 2 weeks now I wonder when he'll be back, and how many plants he'll step on... -Sarah

Welcome Sarah. I think you need to ask mom how to post pictures. I can't wait to see them and see the results of your hard work.

Hi, Sarah! If I'd done half the work you did in 36 hours ... well, I'm not sure I could have done half ... anyway, I'd be face down in the dirt! What energy! Yes, try again with the photos! I'd love to see them!
