I love the large leaves of the Castor Bean and grow them just for that but the cute, funny looking flower is a bonus.

Yes I loved these when I grew them last year. The flowers and spiky seed pods are fascinating.

Those are really pretty. Sue, did you start/finish this as an indoor plant? I tried a few some years back, but they grew very slowly and never got to the flowering stage. Wish this was perennial. Marie in Maine

I'm sure y'all realize that every part of this plant is poisonous. I too grow them and love the tropical look they add to my garden.

Mine is still teeny wheeny. Just got it in the ground about 3 weeks ago, so I doubt I will see flowers either.

I did start these off indoors and for a while they were pretty unimpressive spindly little things that I thought wouldn't come to anything. I planted them in the garden and this is what they looked like on July 11 2004.
I didn't think they'd do very well but just a few weeks later they really took off. So don't despair! I was amazed at how much these plants grew in one season. They were absolutely huge by the time I cut them down after the frosts - easily above my height.
Poisonous yes, but so are many garden plants. Don't let this put you off growing this truly impressive plant. If you want to make a statement this is the plant to do it. I wouldn't hesitate to grow them again, in fact I regret I don't have any this year.

What a shame you don't have them again Sue - it is a very impressive plant. Great pictures everyone.

I have one growing with the spiky seed pods on it...can't you save the seeds and start them inside in the spring?

These are all great photos of a neat plant I've yet to try. I'm hoping to grow one next year as a container plant.

What a beautiful cat Deanne. I might add your very pretty too. I've not tried castor bean in a container, but I suspect it'd do good in a larger sized one, say 12 inches or better. You can save the seeds Mountainash, and start them inside in spring. Be sure no pets or little tykes get around the seedlings.
