I have some carrot and beet seeds. Can anyone tell me if I am too early or too late for a fall crop. I would like to direct sow.

I don't have a lot of experience growing veggies, but I think "early" or "late" would depend on how long it takes them to mature once you get them in the ground, and how hot or cold your climate would be within that time frame.

Well, I planted my beets and carrots in April and I am harvesting some now. I think in zone 6 if you plant now you should get a nice fall crop.
