My before and after is just completed. Our table and benches used to sit in a lovely bed of sweet woodruff. Then the grass and weeds moved in and it was just impossible to weed them out. Even doing it twice a year was a waste of hours better spent elsewhere. So I mowed the sweet woodruff and then the digging began:
We dug down to fairly compact soil and filled the hole with screenings. It took a while to get just the right amount and make it flat. Hosed it down to compact it. Next we got flagstones..of course not quite enough, so had to return for more. Getting everything right is a tricky business, but I am pleased with the outcome!

It looks really good. The sitting area is better defined now then before and the time you save on mowing can be spent on elsewhere...

Oh Nice - though I did love to pull up the grass (I suppose it wasn't just grass!?) with my toes on a hot day, and the smell of it freshly mown... but how long ago was it that I was there in summer anyway! By the way, nice new personal icon photo. Just can't see your face!

Great job Marie and from the shot of your garden beds, they look better than you have been mentioning. I miss seeing your posts of your gardens, you do have some wonderful things. Hopefully the weather will cool off for all of us soon and our plants will respond with some renewed growth.

Very nice! I agree that the stones help to define the "sitting area". How nice to have a shady spot in which to relax.
