About 7 weeks ago, I planted a hollyhock that I purchased from a good local garden center. I was over 4 feet tall and had some buds and some blooms. About 2 weeks later, it lost all it's blooms and seems dormant now. Should I cut it back, and if so, should I wait until frost? Also, it was well fed and watered... the plant looks healthy, but in the past I have lost several hollyhocks I have planted that were way smaller, so I am wondering if this one will survive the winter and come back. Any thoughts on what I should do, if anything? Thank you!!!

Margaret I do cut off the spent blooms (you might want to save some seeds to start a new plant) and I cut my plant back by half. I do have new growth at the base. If your plant and conditions are healthy you should be seeing that as well. Good luck.

Thank you Arlene, I'll plan to cut it in half right away. I appreciate your tip on the seeds too, I will try it.

Lafko, I wouldn't buy such a large hollyhock. They are a taprooted species and it would be better to buy them little and let them develop good roots in their final position. They are also not difficult from seed. Yours probably went into some sort of rootshock when you gave it real dirt, but it should be a survivor. I would cut off nearly all the main stem and let it shoot again from the base, which is what it would have done itself in the second year anyway.
