Coastal northern California is an ideal climate for tuberous begonias. They are completely hardy, the weather is cool enough not to stress them for water, and powdery mildew is not a problem. They return each year even larger than before. I admit--this is the only plant in my garden I selected just for the flower, since flowers aren't a big deal for me in general. But when I was confronted with a barren patch of rocky soil under the front deck, I instantly thought of filling it with tuberous begonias (of course, it took like a yard of compost to make it habitable...)

I sit and have beer here in the afternoon:

I want to find other cultivars and species to add:

This year I seem to have an unusual amount of male flowers. I don't pinch them as recommended, just let the patch go.

They look wonderful! Are the male flowers the multi petal or the single petal ones?

Gorgeous! I am so jealous. My climate is the antithesis of their needs.

Looks great David. Up here we use them as annuals. How wonderful that your's come up year after year. Nice color patch.

What a great idea for this area - they look great. The male flowers are the smaller ones right?

I love tuberous begonias too. But the first thing I thought of when I read you post before pics was beer :). Very nice. I have mine in containers and they are yearly staples here. So is beer.

These are simply lovely. I love tuberous begonias for their fantastic, clear, saturated color. I struggle to grow them and have a real time getting them to go dormant and overwinter for me. Thanks for sharing yours.

Terry and Ann, yes, you're right, the males are the smaller single flowered ones. Wouldn't you know the females get all the extra design work!

Beautiful begonias, David! I'm amazed at how beautiful your leaves are - no brown or spots like mine.

Actually David I am surprised. Take the cardinal, which is more colorful-the male. Learn something new every day!
