I am renovating my garden and am wondering if I can move my Monarda and my Eupatorium (Joe Pye Weed) at this time of year, or do I have to wait until the spring? I am in Iowa, zone 4.

I am no expert but from my experience you can move plants as long as you have a 'big root ball' and water well during and after the move until you can see the plant settled in. I've done that with many of my perennials and shrubs.

I do exactly what Luiza does..I usually wait till they have bloomed ..or before..the stress seems greater when in full bloom. My anemones just told me so.

Thanks, all. I'll take the plunge and do it this weekend (after I attend the big all-day garden show at Brucemore [Cedar Rapids]) because I will probably have more to plant after that. Never saw a plant I didn't want.

Yes you can.... I live in zone 4 and really this is the best time of the year to move anything. It allows them to get a good hold before frost so that they will be ready for beautiful growth next year.

Just one warning !
I know it is heart-breaking, but the plant will recover all the better if you prune ALL the flower stems, and also remove some of the larger leaves (only a few, not all!), when you transplant it... It will require less effort from the plant to feed the remaining vegetation, and by reducing partially the leaf surface you should reduce the water needs too...
