C. purpurascens does have a strong scent generally, although some of my plants (of purpurascens) are more heavily scented than others. Just one good sized plant can fill a greenhouse with scent on a sunny day. C. alpinum is another good species for this. Great on a spring day.

I was doing some re-potting tonight and low and behold, I found this c. hederifolium has a bud! (excuse my dirty hands) Again this is one of my plants which I started from seed last year. It's so tiny I hope it grows on. I also like the leaves on this one too.
So I guess this too proves that Tim's instructions of potting up sooner can result in flowers earlier than if you keep all the new tubers in the same pot for a full year or more as is the traditional method.

This is great Terry! You have the knack, that's for sure. How's that purpurascens bud coming along? Any chance of another up to date photo?

Thanks Tim. It's surprising how it is growing with no curve in the stem as is usual. Maybe as it matures a bit it will look different. I will try to get an updated photo later today of my c. purpurascens. Right now it is pouring-the first rain we have had in a while and the soil is so dry it greatly needs it. Well at least the c. purpurascens should be happy!

Here is my purpurascens this week. The flower stem has grown longer.
I think the overall appearance would be better if I get some more soil in the pot and trim back some of the older leaves. Will this set it back do you think?

I don't think it'll set it back. I would wait for that pot to dry a little though. It looks well watered and it might be wise to time the addition of more soil with the next time you have to water the pot. Don't want that plant to be sitting in wet soil for a prolonged period of time. I'd probably remove the damaged leaves if it were my plant. Leaves can be removed easily from most species by gently pulling on the leaf, or the leaf stalk - not the case usually with C. purpurascens - best to get hold of the leaf stalk between two fingers, and then twist until it comes free at the point where it joins the tuber. Pulling on just the leaf will usually result on just the leaf coming away, leaving the stalk firmly attached to the tuber! Just a tip. Looking forward to seeing that flower open Terry, although probably not quite as much as you are!

Thanks for the tips Tim. Yes the pot is probably very well watered-we had tropical storms that gave us at least an 1" of rain yesterday in a very short period of time. More are due today. And then we are supposed to cool down to normal temperatures again and less humidity. I can't wait. Of course you know I am very impatiently waiting to see the day the flower opens.

By the way Tim, you were correct, the scent is delicious on the c. purpurascens.

Thanks, Shirley. I keep going back to it to smell the flower. To me it has the scent of lily of the valley. I can only imagine what a plant with a few flowers would be like, must be heaven.

Ann's right, Terry, you've got many more flowers to look forward to in the future. Keep us posted on the hederifolium bud too.

Found another c. hederifolium with a bud! It is still tucked in almost to the soil line, but I will keep you updated. This is so exciting! Tim, your internet teaching skills get an A+

Terry deserves all the credit, Joseph. As I've said in another thread, it's easy to give information out - acting upon that information in the correct way is the hard bit. If there are any A+'s to be handed out, it's to you Terry for your growing skills.

Well thank you Joseph and Tim but I still believe Tim that without your help I would never have had this much success. I guess Joseph I have come a long way from those silly pie tins when I first started hellebore seeds! And to think they are now out in the garden doing well and growing larger. So hopefully my cyclamen bed which I planted this year will be doing as well next year.

I went out this morning before going to work and discovered one of my c. purpurascens that was planted in the garden had flowered too. It may have been there a bit as it is not looking as well as my one indoors, looks a bit past it's prime. Or maybe it is just the outdoor conditions are harsher. Of all my purpurascens it seems the silver washed leaf ones are the ones setting flowers over the marked foliage ones. Those seem to have more foliage than the silver ones. Also my c. hederifolium is now open, all white, no markings. I will try to post a picture latter today. I was so excited about another flower I had to post!

My c. hederifolium is a bit disappointing in that it has become so leggy the flower has flopped over. To try to correct it I have put it under lights but it is still floppy. The pot next to it has a bud and I hope this will grow better.
Outside I discovered another of my hederifolium has a bud, I hope it grows on well.
Tim do you have any growing tips to help aleviate this leggy look?
