Last summer I had discovered a single stem in which exhibited variegation. I collected the resulting seeds in HOPES of some carrying on the colorful trait. From the hundreds of seedlings only a very small percentage had shown such coloring. I had lost several before rescuing them from the hungry grasshoppers! I hope to successfully winter these and really look forward to their development in next years garden. Maybe, with a bit of luck I’ll be able to multiply and ENJOY these beauties for years to come! I’m such a lover of variegated plants! Lychnis coronaria (biennial) does very well in my climate, especially with our often cool moist summers. At this late date my plants are still covered in bloom! This is a beautiful plant having soft fuzzy gray foliage and startling magenta blooms!

So do keep your eyes out for such finds and collect the resulting seeds!

WOW! ... an interesting and very attractive plant! Next summer when the plant is in bloom, please do post photos, I bet the contrast between foliage and flower will be fantastic! Thanks for sharing!

Nice, Good for you! You've got some good swapping plant material there.

I've got a White-flowering one too, with traditional foliage, and dianthus like open white bloom. Sometimes they have a fine pink stripe or edge visible for awhile - very pretty. Let me know - if anyone wants seed. I got mine from BarbE in SW WA - so she'll probably also have plant starts to share. She's active in Spring and Fall Swaps - and you can pre-arrange trades.

Me too!!! I have to wait until next year to see mine bloom though since I just got it this fall. I would love to find the variety "Gardener's World" which has a double pink flower. There is one in the garden at the hospital where I work, but I haven't seen them anywhere else except on the internet. Anybody have this one or something like it?

Suzyqt1968, a few summers back I had grown "Gardener's World" ... it's flowers were like miniature deep dark rich red roses! Unfortunately, it is said to be sterile and indeed had produced no seed for me. This is a biennial and not sure how to otherwise keep it going? ... mine was gone after it's first flowering season.

Pdxjules, next fall I shall collect seed and test it for percentage of variegation. Later we can make a trade if it proves to come true. I look forward to seeing how this plant performs.
