Hi everyone I'm from zone 3 and was wanting to over winter my geranium's and begonia's. I have purchased grow lamps and was wondering if anyone can tell me what is the best way to handle these plants.

One way that I have had success with is taking cuttings at this time of year and rooting those cuttings to grow indoors over the winter. Get some 'rooting hormone' and dip the base of the cutting before planting in a sterile potting mix. In the late winter you can take more cuttings of the 'parent' plant and root those too. Welcome to Gardenbuddies!

There are a few different types of begonias and excellent information at www.begonias.ca . I've rooted geraniums with the rooting hormone and kept them over the winter (although I found they smelled like stale tobacco right through the winter). I hope you find a successful way to keep your plants going for next year's new blooms!

I'm in zone 4 (Upper Michigan) and I've kept my begonias going for at least 4 years now, two different ways. First, I've brought the planter to the basement after the frost kills the plant, ignore it for the winter, then bring it back up to a sunny window and start watering it sometime in April. Last Fall I dug the tubers out of the planter and kept them in a box in the basement until April, replanted them, started watering them and put them in front of a window. They seemed to get much bigger this year by pulling the tubers out last Fall so I will do that again.

Mixxie those are beautiful begonia's. I will try your suggestion. Do you have to have a frost first before bringing the plants in? Leslie

Thanks :) It seems like the first good frost usually turns them to mush, so anytime after that when I take my plants in for the winter is when I usually take them in for the Winter.
