Mara I just looked again at your first photo and your fortunei has filled in. Last year there was a bit of distance between it and your fern 'ghost'. This year they look as if they are kissing each other. It looks very happy in your garden.

Mara, good news ! I found my 'Black Ruby' again yesterday, while wandering among my containers with a couple of friends.(they thought I was mad when I suddenly stopped, uttering a loud "Here it is !!!" and kneeling to make sure... My friend Christine_92 nearly tumbled over me !!! lol) It was partly hidden (the saxifraga, not Christine, I mean !), and hasn't bloomed yet, but there are signs of flower stalks, so... Thank you for your kind proposal, anyway ! (I'll take pics later or when it blooms..today it's pouring rain, no chance !)

Oh good. Glad it turned up! I'm looking forward to the pictures of the flowers. One of my two has buds, but I'm afraid winter will arrive too early here for them to open. :-(

Hi Mara, Being such a saxifraga "aficionado" perhaps you can put a name to a saxifraga that was given to me. I have been searching for the answer and can't figure it out. I haven't seen it bloom yet, so that won't help us. The name I was originally given by it's owner was saxifraga hirsuta, but after looking at pictures online I don't think thats it. The leaves are a bit hairy as you can see from the close up. Although the leaves look almost succulent in these pics they are actually a bit stiff. Thanks for any guesses!

It looks very much like my own saxifraga geum, Suzy... Have a look there : http://membres.lycos.fr/mslar/Saxifraga_x_geum.jpg But Mara certainly knows better...;o)

No, not a saxifraga expert, unfortunately. I only know the ones I have, and I'm afraid I don't have yours. But it looks like Zephirine is right!

Oh yes Zephirine and Mara, that does look like it or very very close. Does yours have little hairs on it too? Hard to tell from the photo. The form of it though is definitely the same. Thanks so much. All of you are so knowledgeable..and have the greatest gardens! Suzy

Another question for Mara & Zephirine: I saw this one in a private garden earlier this year. Any idea which saxifrage this is? Silly me, I wrote down only "saxifrage", but now I see that is a very incomplete description.

Oh, I'm afraid it's not a saxifraga at all, dear.. Looks much more like a rodgersia, indeed. And specially like this one, for instance : Rodgersia 'Chocolate wings' http://www.lucsperennialworld.com/perennials/images/rodgersia_chocolate_wings.jpg

I agree with Zephirine, but it still is very handsome. Mara, do you know how lucky you are to have this collection of Saxifraga? Each fall your post has such a great response. I think you should think of exporting them to the US or tell your man who comes to the fair each year to come our way!

I also love saxifraga. I am afraid to grow the late blooming ones because of hot dry periods in summer but have some beautiful small native ones that bloom in early spring before the trees leaf out. The first one that is the species is absolutely stunning. When I begin to move my garden next year to a less-dry location I'll give them a go. Beautiful plants Mara. That first one....wow.

Thank you all for the response. I do enjoy these saxifrages very much. But Terry, I remember last year we talked about a nursery - I think it was in New York State somewhere in fact - that had a fair selection of these saxifrages. Do you remember its name? "My" nursery man imported some of his original stock from Japan. I've asked him about Primula sieboldii, too, because I haven't found a source here to compare with what you've got in the USA. He said he's working on propagating some Japanese varieties - but no sign of them so far on his website - nor at the plant fair :-/

Mara, you have a great memory. I have to try to remember this nursery-Rosylyn Nursery in Long Island, NY. They mail order as you had mentioned when you did a google search. Right now we are getting our first freeze warning and the temperatures as I write are down to 30 degrees F . Planting this late may be the kiss of death. Here's their info: http://roslynnursery.com/

Here are, at last, the pics of Saxifraga fortunei Black Ruby's blooms... I was lucky : I took these pics the very last day before frost hit it..It looks like miserable old rags today...;o(
It is a baby still, the foliage is not as developed as it is on my older S. fortunei rubrifolia. The contrast with the dark red/black leaves is already gorgeous though... I will certainly be looking for your other varieties next spring, Mara !

Yours looks beautiful. Much nicer than mine, which was always damp from dew. It's still a baby too, and also managed to bloom before being hit by last night's frost. I hope it will flower earlier when it grows up. Here's a picture from a couple of days ago

Zephirine your flowers are very nice and so welcome here-everthing is gray now that the leaves have fallen and hard frost has hit. Mara, you say your plant is a baby too, but you seem to have some nice foliage there. I think I still prefer your first ones with the white flowers.

Mara and Zepherine, those are just beautiful. What a wonderful plant to be blooming so late in the season. As others have said in this thread though, I don't know where I would find such a thing here.
