A colleague has bought a new home with a 17 year old existing cedar hedge that is taking up a good portion of her small yard because it is so big - from what she is telling me the main trunks are about 8 inches in diameter - she says they must be 35 ft tall - this I know is an exaggeration. She called two tree services re pruning. One told her they should be pruned now - the other said wait til spring - she asked my opinion but this is definitely not something I could help with. We are in Cdn zone 4. I asked her to send me a pic of the hedge as I thought it might help - maybe it is beyond pruning???? The pic has still not arrived yet but thought I would ask the question anyway as some of you may have experience with overgrown neglected cedars. With a sever pruning are they likely to recover (they need to be pruned in height and width) and if so - when should they be done to maximize survival and regrowth.

I have some cedars hiding a propane tank. They are about 8-10 feet tall. There are 2 of them. I asked a friend who prunes our fruit trees to prune them back a bit for me. He said he could prune them back a bit now, but that spring would be better. He said they need their foliage going into winter. Also, he said they'd look pretty awful for a long while. They might or might not regrow. I'm not sure that answers the problem, but he is very knowledgeable. I am in zone 4/5. My guess is that it would cost a bundle and that they might not know what they are doing. Best to ask friends who really admire their tree men's work. There are so many butchers out there.

Kim - we have cedar hedges that were butchered before we moved here and all we get to see is 4' of bare trunks from the back hedge. I've been planting things in front of them every year for the past 5-6 but nothing grows. Untrimmed they are wild and bushy on the west side of the yard. My advice - tell your friend to have them totally removed! Nothing grows under them or around them because they just sap all the water and nutrients out of the ground. Just my 2 cents worth.
p.s. our cedars are about 30 - 35 ft. tall.

Hi,

Urgent question. I have ordered to plant cedar hedge tomorrow (Nov 20). It's not to late to cancel it. Is it good time to plant it now? I'm living in Richmond Hill, Ontario. The temperature today is up to 8, very light snow was falling last night.

Thank you in advance,
Nekto

I would ask the people you ordered from. They should offer a guarantee with their trees, so if it isn't suitable weather, they would know! My blind guess is that it is OK, even though it is a very cold start to November here near Guelph.
