Oh Denise, what a lovely "camaieu" !!!! And in zone 3 !!! That must be your green fingers !!! Lovely pics indeed, and I'm pretty sure you will have convinced the last reluctant gardeners to adopt those lovely mums !!! Bravo !!!
Mara...would you care for a few bits and pieces of some of mine next spring? Just tell me which...
One more quality of these plants is that they are so easy to share...

Denise, what a lovely display, love the colors. There's a nice looking grass behind the mums. What is it?

Those are beautiful, Denise. Do you mulch or protect them in any way?

Zephirine, you are being kind again. But I'm sure in this case postage would be more than the price of the plants locally. Also I've got to figure out where on earth (in my garden) I can possibly fit them in.

The hosta - I can't imagine, but devious as you are, I'm wondering if there's a hosta called Italian Flag or something. :-)

Devious, Mara? Who??? ME???????????????????? ;o)))
no,no..it's much simpler than that!
That red looks so...hot, and that white, so...cold, don't you think? ;o)
Don't get a headache!!!
And don't you worry about postage! If I send you a dozen different varieties, the total price for each individual plant will be near to nothing !
;o)))

Thank you sweet Zephirine!! And Luiza, I'll have to check tomorrow in the daylight but I think behind the mums are chives. Susan, I just rake some leaves over the whole bed.

So Zeph....I feel people becoming convinced, don't you?
Now, what other mum is cold hardy besides garden mums? I need to add.

Fire and Ice sounds like it might be the name of a hosta. Not that I've ever heard of it.

Are you serious? Don't you remember, I'm the one with the small garden that can barely fit in another snowdrop. Thank you for your offer, but I'd better wait and see whether I can even make space for one plant.

Ah...Mara finally noticed I had threatened to send her "a dozen" mums....lol...lol...lol....
No, dear Mara, I wasn't serious ! (am I ever serious, Mara?..;o)))...))
But once you chose one or two varieties, it will be my pleasure to share mine with you, you know that...you just have to name them!
And it was Hosta Fire and Ice that I had in mind, congratulations !

Game over????
Cling! Cling! Cling !!!!!
No!!!!
Same player shoot again !!!

It isn't entirely my fault, you know : I meant to select TREES, last sunday, when I went to that nursery...but the owner had invited one of his perennial nursery-friends, whom I happen to know quite well, from the Vosges mountains, to sell her plants on this special sunday occasion...I must be cursed !!! How could I resist temptation????
Three more mums for my greatest pleasure :
- an old european variety, very faithful, which I was longing for since I had left it in my first garden : Paul Boissier !

- and two "bootlet-buttons" ("boutons de bottines")lovely varieties: the flowers are the size of Mey-Kyo, or even slightly smaller, but so numerous, look !
The Mey-Kyo with hot caramel dressing is 'Peterkin'

and the one with raspberry coulis is 'Julie' !

I hope this is all...for this year !!! lol...

Oups...Not yet !!! I've forgotten one !!!
The friends who visited me last week-end also brought me another lovely one, very hardy, with dainty, middle size, soft butter, cream/yellow daisies (a bit more yellow than the pics show): Chrysantemum groenlandicum.
In fact, they brought a small pot with the plant in one hand...and a couple of the flowers of the mother plant in the other ! Here is the other hand's content, with a bloom of 'Feu de l'Automne'...and my grand mother's coffee grinder, for a change !

I'm looking and learning, Zephirine. Paul Boissier is awfully pretty. Can you give information on the comparative heights of the ones you have shown, please. Also, if you know them, comparative flowering periods.

Your questions are not as easy as one could think Mara... especially for chrysanthemum, the height highly depends on where and how you grow them : for instance, the height of Mey-Kyo varied from 70/80 cm (2,5'),unpruned in a bed in my own garden, to a mere 40-50 cm (1,5'), pruned in the dryer soil of a large container.
It also depends on how hard and how late your prune it...
Another example : in the rich, watered soil of my garden beds, most mums always had 1.5 times the size of the same plant, in my friend Michele's dryer, "vine-type" soil...
I will only give you trends, if you don't mind...with dimensions which I think they would reach, properly pruned, in a normal garden bed.

The high ones (70-90 cm), tending to flop if you have a rich soil and don't prune them enough, include :
- Emperor of China (latest)
- Paul Boissier (late)
- supposed-to-be "Duchess of Edinburg" (mid-season to late), doesn't flop that much
- Feu de l'automne and Rosette probably belong here too

The middle sized ones (60-70 cm), pruning highly recommended too, would be
- Isabelle, from what I see this year
- Melanie (mid season)
- Mey-Kyo (early to mid-season)

The lower ones (50 cm), no pruning required, are :
- Apricot (very early until late)
- Martine's white, the one with salmon then lemon heart, ending white (mid-season until late)

Most others are too recent in my garden (or not even yet arrived in it !)for me to be positive.
As I write it, I realize that it's a little bit like asters or irises : the taller the later, in fact !
With one noticeable exception, considering the length of its blooming period (end july to november) : Apricot !
Another thing that I noticed is that double forms bloom much longer than the simple ones.

In fact, mums will look all the better as the soil is not-too-rich, and not-too-watered (but not too dry, though, unless the lower leaves gradually dry, like asters), and pruned as far as the the taller ones are concerned.
It's recommended to divide them every 4 to 5 years, I would say, like asters again...

This was Zephirine's two-penny bit opinion on how to grow mums...for what it's worth !
But others might have other experiences in their gardens, with different figures, I'm sure...
But even if you don't prune them, water them like mad or leave them alone in a forlorn corner of your veggie garden, they should bloom like mad...maybe at the level of your feet, with wavy stems behind, but profusely...and they are very good flowers for bouquets, too, lasting well over a week !
I hope this will help a little ?

It helps a lot! Thank you so much - there's all the information I was hoping for. I'll save it for next spring when I'll look for a place to plant one (or two...?).
This sort of information would be invaluable in EJ's projected database.
