This has been an unusual growing season for the Midwest. I just read we had an additional 3 weeks for the growing season, all of it extending our autumn. I still have many leaves on the trees and no frost, which is very, very unusual for my zone.

I love autumn with its sense of decay, fecundity, nostalgia, introspection. Last night's rain storm created a wave of yellow elm leaves carpeting the ground. Enjoy some of the autumn views:

Mike, I so much enjoyed ALL of your pictures. I was trying to figure out which I liked best, but they each had their own specialness that I gave up! Thanks for posting them. BTW, what the heck does "fecundity" mean? I tried to look it up, but my dictionary leaves much to be desired. I love learning new words, so please enlighten me!!

Mike, you really have an eye for pictures.
You have inspired me. I will need to get out there and see what I can capture.

Fecundity: fertility. It seems that every thing is so fertile, they're dissolving. You can smell the earth in every autumn breath. Thanks, everyone!

I agree about the beauty of autumn. This year was very special here in terms of colour. Last night's winds brought down all the silver maple leaves....so our golden trees are glowing no more.

I has been a lovely long fall but after yesterday and last night's storms most of our leaves have fallen now. What are the two plants in the third shot in front of the hosta, Mike? I love that last scene too.

Some really nice shots you have there. We enjoyed the balminess as well Mike. We love fall too and wasn't it wonderful to have the bonus of extended warm weather?! We did get frosts here but apparently nothing too devastating as the roses are still blooming as well as a few clematis. Last night a big storm system went through...much thunderstorms plus high wind adversaries right through 9 o'clock tonight. The woods look pretty bare now.

Third pic: Dwarf fothergilla is the shrub (still a baby, fragrant white bottlebrush flowers in the spring), purple salvia in front of that.

Last pic: Stewartia pseudocamillia is the showstopper tree.

Thanks, y'all are welcome to come visit. This year we actually have some pretty fall colors around. I never know why we get them some years and not others. I has not rained here though for about 6 weeks so everything is so dry and that may be a factor.
