Help! I've had my home's foundation crack due to our really dry year here in North TX. The major repairs start tomorrow and I've just been told my hostas will be in the way of the construction. They are not yet dormant. What is the best approach? Should I replant them right after the construction is complete? (That would mean they are out of the ground for about 10 days). Or would it be better to separate them, let them dry out a bit and store them to plant next spring? I'm not an expert on hostas, but these have been in the ground for about 5 years and have done quite well for me. Usually I just mulch over them for the winter and they return in the spring. Any expertise will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Do you have somewhere you could replant them until spring? They're pretty hardy, moving them shouldn't bother them, if you leave them alone until then.

Welcome to gardenbuddies, Cheryl! My climate is somewhat different than yours and so our hostas are dormant already, but I agree with Liz that hostas are very hardy. If you have a place you could plant them in until spring, that would be a great idea. Any dividing you want to do, wait until then.

Yikes! So frustrating! I was just about to end a nice thank you to both of you for your input, when the note I was composing just vanished! Oh well, life in cyberspace. I did want to thank you both for your suggestions. As it turned out, the largest area of the bed was left alone. Those plants that had to be moved have indeed been replanted ( and will be mulched over) to an area in the yard just to get them through the winter. Will move again when I see their pretty little heads popping in the spring. I really did not know these guys were that hardy. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with me.
