i am so impressed by all the expertise that i see here,
and i'm embarrassed to show my vast ignorance ,
but i'd like to ask for your help.
i want to make an accurate tag for this plant that i bought recently.
it's probably quite common, but i thought it was very pretty.

many thanks,

Hello Ellie - don't be embarrassed to ask for help, it's one of the reasons this forum (and GB in general) exists.

Your plant is certainly a 'florists cyclamen', which is a type of cyclamen used mainly for growing inside the house. All these types of cyclamen derive from the wild species, Cyclamen persicum, and through many years of selection and breeding, there are now hundreds of named cultivars showing all sorts of weird and wonderful characteristics.

Finding out exactly which cultivar name applies to your plant would be difficult I think. You're getting into rose and snowdrop territory, as like those two types of plants, there are so many different named forms, many of which are difficult to tell apart.

Hi Ellie, good to have you visiting. Tim is slowly educating the rest of us on the world of cyclamen. I actually started growing them from seed only last year. After a zillion questions which Tim has answered so patiently, I am getting to know them a bit better.

I had a florist cyclamen last year which was so enjoyable. It kept on flowering through the winter months and only went dormant as the hot weather set in. Right now it is downstairs with the rest of my species cyclamen throwing up some leaves and looking like it will produce a flower too.

thank you Tim, i really appreciate your help.
the tag in my plant now reads "cyclamen persicum ~ unknown"
and i will protect it from the cold temps of winter.

and Terry, thanks for your encouragement, too.
i'd love to be able to enjoy this little guy through the whole season,
i hope that i can keep him happy enough to continue blooming.

Just don't give it too much water and place it in a spot that is not too much sun and you should be ok. Watering from the bottom til the top of the soil feels damp will help. Over watering is one reason you can loose them.
