First, 'normal' cilicium flowers. Second photo is of C. cilicium forma Album, and the third photo is of a plant I have which has exceptionally dark flowers for this species. As with my previous postings, all photos taken earlier today.

I agree Ann, these are such a treat. In photo 2 the flower appears to be long and more narrow than the other two. I like the way 3 shows up the veins in the flower petals but I tend like the more delicate color of 1. Any scent? Can you show you give us a photo of the leaves also Tim at some point?

I'll post some cilicium leaf photos this coming weekend. C. cilicium is heavily scented (honey scented)and on a warm day the glasshouse smells of nothing else.

Tim, I am interested in that exceptionally dark C. Cilicium with that heavy honey scent pictured, if seeds are availble for 2006! wilsonae cyclamen

Wilson, I do believe if you look over the list you may find it there. I don't have access to it at the moment, but if you check, maybe Tim still has seed now and you could send in another order. I think if it is there it would be the safe thing to do, sometimes what species sets seeds one year does not the next, so you may miss out.

There is no C. cilicium (dark flower) on the 2005 list. It is flowering now (only its second year), but it is unlikely there will be any seed on the 2006 list either, as it seems reluctant to set any. I will do my best.

BTW, for those interested, this species survived 2 winters OUTSIDE in my very well drained gravel garden, zone 5b. So it is pretty hardy if the drainage is good.

David, have you tried C. mirabile outside under similar conditions?

No, Matthias, I have not grown C. mirabile in the open garden. I am not sure exactly where it fits on the hardiness scale. It is also noteworthy that in the same gravel garden, planted right next to a large boulder, I did also have a plant of C. graecum overwinter. It did not bloom, but survived ambient air temperatures of -15F in those conditions, to at least leaf out the following fall. When I get settled again, I am interested in experimenting with more species to see which may be hardy in colder climates. As with other plants, ideal protected conditions may sometimes allow one to push the hardiness envelope. I think this has been relatively little tested in North America, mainly because cyclamen as a group tend to be little known and grown in many areas outside the PNW and areas of the east coast. Even many experienced gardeners here have never seen any cyclamen in the open garden, or assume that only C. hederifolium is hardy.

Three photos of C. cilicium foliage. The first is of mediocre cilicium foliage. Second is average. Third is very nice for this species. The third plant (I have two of them) I grew from seed which came through The Cyclamen Society seed distribution scheme. And it was labelled as special.

Very nice Tim. I think I need you to take a plane over and help me identify unlabeled pots. The more I see the more confused I am. What a huge mistake on my part not to label.

Average or not, Tim, I like the leaf in your second photo best: Three different shades of green-silver combined with that dark bluegreen central shield make that leaf very attractive for me.
