One of the best things about making a baked ham once or twice a year is being able to make split pea soup! I love it! I know some people can't stand to even look at it
Here is the best recipe I've found - I like the fact that it has leek and lots of thyme - yum! Erwtensoep (Dutch Split Pea Soup) 1 pound dried split peas (I like to add some yellow split peas too) 1 shank or butt end of smoked ham (1-1/2 lbs) or 1 leftover ham bone 3 large onions, copped coarse 1 leek, cleaned, halved length-wise, and sliced cross-wise 2 celery ribs, chopped course 2 carrots, chopped coarse 1 potato, chopped coarse 2 teaspoons thyme Salt and freshly ground pepper Left-over ham cubed - about 2 cups 1/4 cup copped parsley Combine the ham bone with the peas and 3 quarts of water in a large Dutch oven or stock pot. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat, and cook 30 to 40 minutes, skimming frequently. Add the onions, leek, celery, carrots, and potato. Add the thyme and season well with salt and pepper. Simmer slowly, uncovered, for about 4 hours or until very thick, stirring occasionally. Remove the ham bone and discard. Cut off any meat and cube and/or stir in the leftover cubed ham and parsley and serve. (The original recipes calls for using a pig's knuckle and adding sliced Knockwurst 30 minutes before serving and 1 Tbsp hickory smoked salt - I omit these) Adapted from New York Entertains Serves 8

I absolutely love pea soup, especially with leek and carrots in it. Haven't tried mine with potato, but have put a little rice in it! I must make this one! Thanks, Susan!

I hate the stuff. Here's s funny story. Many years ago someone I barely knew called and asked for a favor. She had a child with leukemia who was quite ill and needed a medication refill. Mom called me (we had just exchanged phone #'s in the park across the street from my house a few days before). Could I pick up the meds for her after my kids were off to school? I did. A few days later a huge tub of pea soup was left at my door. None of us would eat it but it was a sweet thing for her to do. The daughter is in college now. She's been fine since.

Looking at your beautiful presentation I don't feel like I should admit about belonging to the 'don't like it very much' group...

Well I like it just fine even though I don't care for ham very much. But these days I'm eating my tomato Miracle Soup and exercising. I really like your checkered plate Susan! I shouldn't even be LOOKING at this forum...

I HATE pea soup! Even though, DH loves split pea soup, I have never made it in my life! Well, I surprised him today, and made your recipe SusyQ. However, since I didn't have a ham bone, I used lamb shanks. You cannot imagine how he devoured 1/2 pot of soup!!!!! He LOVED it!! He wants to give you ((((HUGS))) and (((KISSES)))! Thanks for sharing SusyQ. I will never eat pea soup, but I will make it again for DH. LOL

I hope he gave you lots of Hugs and Kisses too Treanna for being such a loving wife and making it just for him!! Now lamb is something I find hard to eat - unless it's grilled lamb chops with lots of other flavor or relish added!

Love it. I often buy ham hocks and make it. Never can just make enough for 2 people so always have tons to freeze. Since I still have some in the freezer, I turned my ham in to navy bean soup this year. Sooooo good too. Put lots in the freezer for those cold rainy days.

I have a wonderful Virginia ham leftover in the fridge from an afternoon party this past Sunday. We've had lots of leftovers from it....ham and eggs, ham salad sandwiches and other things, but now I know what we'll be having next, lol. I LOVE Split Pea soup and so does DH. I'll go shopping tomorrow for the ingredients. Thanks for the reminder, Susan. I hope DH doesn't mind just one more ham dish, lol. Suzy
