Here's a link to Donahues on-line catalog where they list it separately in their 'Premium Collection': http://www.donahuesclematis.com/premium.html

Shirley1md wrote on Tuesday, January 31, 2006 - 01:06 pm:BTW, I found Avant Garde in the Park Seed Company catalogue, so it's widely available.
Beware...(this may not be the case any more) but when I ordered from PS the clematis was very tiny...no top growth, just a small root. IMHO, they should not be sold THAT small. So, I would definitely ask them what size they are before I ordered clematis from them.

Susan, thanks for posting the link to Donahue's. Avant Garde is listed separately on their website, but not in their brochure they send out. That's what the confusion was all about. In fact, Avant Garde isn't even listed in the brochure, but it is pictured in the Festoon Collection. Tanya, I don't doubt that the Avant Garde from Park Seed is very small. I believe their price was $8.95 plus shipping. I would not expect a large plant for that amount. Plus, they've probably sold them quickly at that very reasonable price. All it takes is time for that baby to grow into a gorgeous specimen! Roelie, I can't wait to see Debbie's website! She's been working very hard on it!!

Everybody does what they like, for sure, but for a dollar more, the ones from Donahue's are much better prepared to leave the nursery. I've ordered from both places, and quite a few others...I'd just rather it got off to a robust beginning. Actually, here's the pic from last April of Lasurstern from Donahue's. Wouldn't it be wonderful, though, if it were widely available in our local nurseries? :)

I have heard some pretty big complaints about Park's clematis from quite a few people, so I don't even look at their site anymore. Their plants are barely even rooted, all under 1 yr. old. There's a good chance that Bluestone is selling the same size plants, but no-one here (that I know of) has ever ordered from them, so I'm experimenting a bit. I'm hoping for a pot-bound root system if anything, seeing that the pots are only 2 1/2 " in size. That's pretty tiny, hinting to me that these are also 'liners'. However, I plan to nurse these plants indoors with my other seedlings over the next winter if necessary, knowing their delicacy. The sad thing is that the general public wouldn't know that these tiny plants need extra special care and that they can't go into the ground for a while. This is what upsets me the most about selling 'liner plants' to the public. It's very deceptive and unfair. The general public would unknowingly plant these outdoors (as instructed) and would likely lose them in their very first winter. To me, this is really a big rip-off. When the Bluestone plants arrive this spring I'll let you all know what size root system they have. I can usually tell the age of a clematis pretty easily by the roots. Normally, I don't buy plants at this tender size, but in this case I will be able to care for them using my experience at growing from seed, so will nurse them along with my other seedlings. I contacted Debbie today and got an updated list. Wait until you see what she has for sale this year ! The list is huge and very, very impressive. She's gone big ! If these Bluestone 'Avant Garde' plants don't look very good, I will return them and get one of Debbie's when they're ready to go in June. But before then, I will be ordering others from her for sure. She has a few rare and unheard of names that you will all be surprised with. Congratulations Debbie, great job ! Suzy PS: Tanya, I have never yet ordered from Donahues, but I like the looks of their plants. Next time, perhaps....But first, I'll always check Debbie's list first, lol.

Avant Garde does appeal to me. I'm going to order it from Donahues along with Bonanza and Vesuvius. I want all three. Katie

Here's her site Hedge, but unfortunately Debbie can't ship plants to Norway. At least you can look at what she has though. It's a very nice list. http://www.silverstarvinery.com/ Welcome to Gardenbuddies ! Suzy
