Last year I started some seed from Zephirine and Mike in Chicago. Being brand new at clematis and clematis from seed, I am excited to see some progress. Zephirine's Mme. Collette (which I hope is hardy in my area)

Yes, a warm "Hurrah!!!! " for you Terry ! But...What is this Mme Colette???? I don't remember sending you anything with that name....Could it be Madame Lecoultre (or "Le Coultre" as we sometimes write it here) ? I'll check on last year's notebook, maybe I kept track of it... Enjoy your new babies...and your coming holidays too!

Very nice results, Terry ! It will be interesting to see what the first flowers look like ! They can be similar, or completely different ! This is what makes growing from hybrid seed so much fun. It will be fun to see your flowers next year. Congratulations ! Suzy

Thanks everyone. Zephirine, let me check the tag- probably in my haste to post this morning I did not read it correctly. Not enough coffee in my system, I guess. You sent some seeds to us in the states as a test to see if we would receive them, and we did!

Ton, if you only new how many cyclamen and hellebores I have growing under lights.... So to add a few clematis can't hurt. Zephirine, after looking closer at my picture I think you have the name of your seedlings correct.

WONDERFUL, SO EXCITED FOR YOU TERRY :) I just dream of growing little seedlings from clematis seeds! What is your mixture you have them in? perlite and soil, with some gravel mixed in? Hee, hee, just wondering how you got them to grow so good for you? Patricia

I just noticed some more posts here, thank you everyone for the encouragement. Patricia, I have them potted up in a seed starting soil sold as grow well. I don't think I added much perlite but I did run boiling water over the soil to help sterilize it (I think this is recommended by Deno). When it cooled I pretty much followed Brian's instructions and topped the pots with some grit which I also use on my cyclamen pots and hellebores too. They were started last year and then put outdoors for the summer, fall and early into December. At first I had them in plastic to retain the moisture but then took that off and they would get watered when I was watering all my other seedlings which had been started last year. As far as what I am growing Mike, you sent a mix with Mrs. N. Thompson, Goodwin and Multiblue and aslo Ramon. Zehperine sent Mme. Le Coultre and another one-Haku Oakas(?). Not sure I got the last one right Zephirine, maybe you can tell me. I also started tangutica ssp. obtusiuscula and alpina-cultivar mix this year from GardensNorth last year. I have had germination with alpina-cultivar mix after a warm cold warm period. This brings me to some questions. I have the alpina-cultivar mix in the upstairs area of my house still under the plastic baggie. Should the baggies be removed once germination is underway or left on for added moisture? I have most of the seedlings downstairs in a room that can range from upper 30F to low 60F. This winter they have been in the 40F-low 60F range due to the mild weather we are having. Is this a better area for good growth than the house which we keep in upper 60F to low 70F? Where do you think the alpina-cultivar mix would do better, the warm or cooler room? Last, I have been trying to get some ideas of what the species clematis look like, I think they are very delicate looking. Most pictures show close ups of the flower but I need to know what the overall impression of the plant looks like. Can anyone direct me to a site or book or post pictures of some of the species so I can see what the full plant looks like. Thank you for your patience with this newbie.

'Haku Ookan' it should be Terry (the spelling is from a japanese word, meaning "Imperial Crown", and I have seen it spelled various ways...) http://www.clematis.hull.ac.uk/clemdetail.cfm?dbkey=199 The mother plant is a much deeper/darker blue, and the anthers a brighter, shinier gold, than what the pics on cotw suggest... No chance to have any answer from me to your questions, lol...but I'll be reading the answers with much interest !

TERRY - personally I would remove the seedling pots from the baggies immediately germination and growth starts. They (any clematis seedlings this young) only need minimum moisture, definitely not wetness as such; as with other plants seedlings you run the risk of damping off or other fungal problems, if there is too much water/stasis. I would move them to the warmer room but avoid drafts and steam, moisture etc. A nice, bright window, but don't let direct sun get to them until a few weeks have gone past, and then, only very sparingly. They want, ideally, to be in diffuse light, in my experience. Species clematis - there is a wide range, did you have any particular plants in mind?

Many thanks Zephirine for the spelling and the information. Brian, I am taking your advice (who am I to go against such wisdom) and I have removed them from the bag and will get them in front of a window with diffused light-now just need to keep the cats away from them! As far as species go, I like the Atragene types, some of the Texensis-Viorna group such as Princess Diana, Odoriba, Montana 'Elizabeth', some of the Viticella group such as 'Campaniflora', 'Etoile Rose'. Do they combine well with other shrubs or do they look better alone?

Brian, if you read my post, I meant to mention that I am going away next week. Will leaving these seedlings out exposed to the air of the house be too much? Will they tend to dry out? It looks like two of the seedlings in one pot have suffered a bit and appear dry.

They should generally be ok in the house for a while Terry, given suitable conditions - all things being equal. In mid-diffuse light, no drafts, not too warm etc. About the two that seem a bit dry - it's difficult to say anything without a sight of them - and what specific types, how old, local conditions etc. A photo would be handy if possible. Those seedlings you showed above looked great, and I would say they would likely withstand most potential problems, but you can still sometimes lose the odd one from time to time nevertheless.
