One of my neighbors has this clematis growing beside her entrance. It's been there for a few year now. I know she cuts it down to within 3-4 inches of the ground in the fall every year. In spring it shoots up and is just covered in flowers. I want one!!!

I figured the center boss (anthers) for yellow. I took a look at COTW and couldn't come up with anything that had the same tepal shape, white tepals and center boss of yellow. The closest was Gillian Blades but the tepal shape is wrong. Huldine was not right either. Any other ideas, anyone?

Jeanne, I have Henryi and it looks different. Unless my Henryi is not really Henryi :). Katie, the anthers are not really yellow, more cream colored. The dark (black) center anthers are not as pronounced when the flowers first open. I think I took this picture shortly before the flowers faded.

Maybe she will share some cuttings and you could try rooting it? That way you would know you are getting the right one and as prolific a bloomer.

How about 'Lemon Chiffon', seems pretty close. ..and I will try cuttings. I'm sure I'll get some. The bigger challenge will be to make them grow.

Well since it takes well to hard pruning, I also would be really interested in knowing what variety it is! Terry

Lemon Chiffon is certainly closer than any of the others. I can't believe she cuts it all the way back. One would think it wouldn't bloom very well as it is a type 2. Katie

I am also confused as all the once which I think are very close are classified as type 2. However, I know this for a fact that the plant is severly trimmed back in the fall. I'm posting one more closeup which shows several little tapels around the center. Some of the other flowers also exhibit this. Is this significant and might it help in the identification?

To me this really looks like Guernsey Cream pictured at Bluestone perennials. http://www.bluestoneperennials.com/b/bp/scan/fi=products/st=db/sp=results_b ig/sf=code/se=CLGCP.html The picture of Guernsey Cream at 'clematis on the web' looks different then many flowers that I've seen elsewhere.

Louisa, I'm at a loss because of the bloom time in your cold zone. The exact time of bloom would be of great help. In my zone, group 2's can't produce flowers after a winter pruning and you are even farther north than I am ! So, I would tend to rule out a group 2 type. Also, my group 3's don't bloom here until June/July so I am at a complete loss for a true guess if your friends plant blooms earlier. This flower looks like a group 2, but it doesn't at all fit the bloom time for a pruned group 2 type! Are you sure it's early spring-time blooming and not late June/July ? Exact month bloom time in your zone would greatly help in identification as to a group 2 or 3 type to narrow it down quite a bit. I don't have all that many group 3 whites, so I'll leave this to others who may know better. The winter pruning and spring-time bloom has me quite confused. It's a beauty, though ! Suzy

Luiza, here is my Guernsey Cream which I have treated like a Group 2. It blooms very early here - in May. Your neighbor cuts in down in the fall? It seems like a strange time! The rounded tepals make me think it is GC
Here is Miss Bateman for comparison:

I reviewed my photo albums and this was taken the first days of June. The flowers must have started blooming in the second half of May. It's a mystery then :) I promise to pay close attention to the plants growth in spring and I'll supply clearer pictures of the flowers. We'll only have to wait about 3 months :(

Definitely not Miss Bateman which has much darker anthers. Guernsey Cream seems to be the closest match as far as the flower is concerned. Probably at this point I have no option but to wait and see what happens in May. I will also try to examine up close if there's any visible buds...once the snow melts.
