"Kiri Te Kanawa" …… people in colder climates might wish to make special note of this one! The beautiful dark blue double flowers are also developed on new wood! In my cold climate, I’m HOPING it shall flower as generously as “Blue Light” … time will tell! http://www.homeofclematis.net/kiri.html http://www.clematisnursery.com/detail.aspx?ID=143

It's very pretty, Terry. I'm happy you informed 'us northerners' about it's ability to bloom double in cold climates. I've had trouble with my Piilu. I can't seem to get any doubles here, although Ingmarie has in Sweden. My Royalty bloomed semi-double for the first time last summer, but I only had one flower from my mature plant. Here's the one and only flower:

You should not prune the plants who give first blooming double. You prune first blooming away. Even if you prune you only get twice single flowers.

Suzy, due to your climate, I know you have several times mentioned having problems with the type 2's. Your temperatures are not terribly cold, is it the winter wet that damages the old wood? Here due to extremely cold temperatures all top growth is lost, and thus I basically stick only to the type 3's OR some of the very hardy type 1's. It's great to have such new comers as "Blue Light" that'll produce a very nice show of double flowers even on new wood ... I'm hoping "Kiri Te Kanawa" will be as good of a producer. PS I LOVE your Royalty shot! It rather resembles "Kiri Te Kanawa", though this one should(?)actually flower under our conditions.

Bloomorelse, that's a GOOD question! Unfortunately, I imagine we'll have to wait a few years on this one.

Terry, I think it's our constant wild fluxuations in temperatures. Tomorrow we'll hit 50 degrees here, this just after a blizzard left us with 18" of snow 3 days ago. The deep freeze returns again next week. We have a freeze and thaw problem here that wreaks havoc on the roots and stems of my group 2's. Some perennial plants are actually heaved right out of the ground ! I would prefer to have a constant freeze situation, where the plants aren't subjected to quite this amount of stress. But, on the other hand, I personally LOVE these winter thaws because I can almost taste spring ! I hope you find your Kiri Te Kenawa one day soon. Suzy

Suzy, thank you for the explanation on your climate and the difficulties growing type 2 clematis. We also have wilding fluctuating temperatures, last week we basked in very pleasant sunny highs in the 50’s and now we’re getting a bitter ARCTIC blast ... though, only the second of the winter, thankfully! Difference here is that once the ground is deeply frozen, it stays that way until spring, and so there's never any problems with plants heaving. Seems there’s good and bad points experienced in all climates! I also WISH I could grow the type 2’s ... but, that’s okay as it limits and narrows down the tremendous selection that exists. Heck, I don’t wish to be filling my yard with 200 or 300 clematis plants! ... and you know, I would if I could!
