For anyone in Michigan or who might be visiting Michigan in May....and may be interested in some 'out of the ordinary' clematis, these are some of the neat clematis Bordine's will be carrying this season. I'm sure they will be in the $20-30.00 price range. I have no affiliation with them whatsoever, although that might be nice! :)

Very interesting Tanya! I read somewhere that Amanda Marie is the first clematis with variegated foliage offered to us buyers.....

Hm, my Minister is more pinkish.

Ingmarie, my Minister is more blue than COTW's pic. Your pic is really beautiful but does not match mine at all. (?)

Interesting. I wonder if there is a reaction to soil pH. Apart from the colour they do look the same, don't they?

The comparison is interesting, I looked in my photos from last year just to see how my Minister compared. Mine is more the color of Ingmarie'sPlant Forum

Very strange. Such a difference in colour. I have gone through all my photos of my Minister and they are all the same. We had a very long period with rain June 2004, if that can be the reason. We have normal pH here. This photo is taken 4-5 days earlier. I didn't take so many photo in the summer 2005.

Hi Penny! I see now that you have posted here, while I looked through my photos. Our "Ministers" are very alike, mine has very prominent bars. And to be honest I remember I thought the flowers to be almost too big....

You are so fortunate to have a nursery that carries such interesting clematis near you, Tanya! There are three that sound verrrrrry interesting to me :)

Wow Ingmarie...mine doesn't have that strong pink shade at all. How curious...

This one was taken in October 2005...the first was in July. Does anyone else have this one with pics you can share? I think later in the season as others are available we may have more to compare ours with. They are really both beautiful!

A very interesting thread! I'm pondering over to send this link to Taavi Kivistik in Estonia to have his opinion.....

I bought my clematis at one of the "special clematis nurseries" here in Sweden, where I have bought my Gladys Picard or Gillian Blades earlier!!!!! (I'm still not sure of those ladies names!) Here's my label:
But as you can see. what I got isn't exactly like the clematis that is on the label.
Plant Forum

As a curiosity, on the label in four languages we are told that this clematis is only for decoration, not for consumption......

Ingmarie, our labels (some I've noticed) are WAY off. I doubt if I have my Minister label. I have a feeling yours may be closer to the 'real' Minister if those pictured @COTW colors are quite accurate. I'm trying to think if this was my Minister's first season...sometimes they are quite different that first blooming season. I'll be curious to see them again in about 60-70 days (here's hoping!! ) Let us know if you hear from TK.

It does have rather large flowers but one of the things I love about it is the number of flowers it produces over a very long period of time. It was beautiful for most of the summer, my photo was taken in August and it had been in bloom since the end of May. Unfortunately it was one of the ones cut to the ground by a rabbit this winter. I liked it so much I ordered a replacement, I just discovered it is coming from below ground so now I'll have two. A good way to compare them?

Penny...how fortunate that you'll have two now! Rabbits have 'pruned' a good many of mine. Here's one from New Eden Pride of Plants from the Kivistik collection. Not a perfect color match but the description is noteworthy...

5inch Lavender/blue, suffused purple Cream filaments with reddish/purple anthers Compact, very free flowering, ideal for cont. May, June, July, Aug, Sept

Actually, it's not exactly nearby but it IS in Michigan and the drive is manageable...about an hour or more but it's all pretty good roads. I'd be willing to pick any or all of them up for you and we could meet somewhere in SW MI. for your pick up! DH likes to go for a ride...maybe your DH would too! We could rendevous at a Cracker Barrel or Bob Evans and have a late lunch...depending on the time thing. Sounds like fun!

Minister is lavendelblue. I had it it goes to the color of Mrs cholmondely . I controlled it near Kivistik side .I saw they had new side and new pictures .Looks the most like the last pict. of Sunnyday but I believe the petals are more waved.

Now I'm really intrigued, I can't wait to compare the two of mine. Maybe my new one will look more like Tanya's.

One thing I have noticed about clematis is how much the color is affected by the day and nightime temperatures as well as the maturity of the plants.
I'm glad I got into growing them later rather than earlier in my gardening life, I don't have a lot of patience but it has gotten better as I mature and clematis definitely require patience.

I was just looking at Chalk Hills website and noticed their photo of Minister looks more like Ingmarie's and mine.

Hi! Penny! I'm so glad to hear your Minister is appearing again! I hope if one plants the clematis 6-8 under the surface (as they write in the books), they will survive both the cold (-16C here last night) and the attacks of wilt and damage done by rabbits and bugs. I just ordered a Minister directly from Taavi in Estonia and begged him to have a look at our thread.... And Tanya! I can't wait to see our 'Ministers' this year. Of course Penny will be the first one to have flowers.

You know, I would be just delighted to have one that looks like yours Ingmarie...that is really beautiful! In fact, if I see the flower blooming at Bordine's (they typically are) I will pick it up in a heartbeat! It is intriguing to read the description of it. Does your label give a color description on the back?

This is truly an interesting thread....
Tanya, which one of the Bordines do you go to? I've been to them all, lol but my favorite one is the Clarkston store, then Rochester location. The newer ones aren't just the same.
Have you received their spring catalog already? I'm patiently waiting.

Saks...good to hear from you! Since I'm in Saginaw County, the nearest one is in Grand Blanc. I wish the others were closer as I think the ones you mentioned are open year-round. I've been to both of them but only make it that far once a season, usually. I haven't gotten a catalog yet. :( But, most
