Can someone walk me through the differences between these? Some of you may remember my post last year about trying to keep my (possibly mismarked) C. ramosa 'Black Beauty' as purple as I'd seen in other gardens. Now I'm interested in C. ramosa 'Black Negligee' because I saw it last year in the NY Botanic Garden in full sun and really purple. But I don't really know the differences between the two. Does anyone? Keep in mind their true names are now Actea, not Cimicifuga, although the latter is far more fun to say.

Mike I don't know for sure, but C. racemosa (or A. racemosa etc.) is native to Eastern North America, C. simplex is native to Russia, and my feeling is that C. ramosa may not be a species at all but only found in gardens. I have only seen that name attached to cultivar names, but I could be wrong. Hard to keep up with this group sometimes. :-) All are nice plants though. Anyone else know about "ramosa?" I also grow A. rubifolia (aka C. rubifolia C. cordifolia, C. racemosa var cordifolia etc etc.) which is quite different and a nice plant.

This is how I think of these. I may be wrong because you will see many cultivars called both C. racemosa and C. simplex. I believe C. racemosa is the plant you will find when you search "Black Cohosh". I have this plant. It has slowly gotten huge. It blooms now and last a long time. My plant has green leaves. I also have C. simplex James Compton and that blooms in autumn for a much shorter time. If you search this variety, you will see it called C. racemosa at least as much as C. simplex. The seed also developes a lot faster. Also you can tell the plants apart by their seed. They are not identical.

I'm no expert on Racemosa, though I plan on getting Sambucus racemosa 'Sutherland Gold' and Sambucus racemosa "Plumosa Aurea" this fall (if I can find a shady enough spot to avoid leaf burn). I did some research for you on Dave's Garden and found (1) There was a plant listed with the cultivar name "Hillside Black Beauty". See http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/86960/index.html The Genus is listed as "Actaea" and the Species is listed as "Simplex". (2) There was also a plant listed with a cultivar name of "Black Negligee". Like number one above, the Genus is listed as "Actaea", but unlike number one above, the Species is listed as Racemosa, not "Simplex". http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/76425/index.html This may not be too helpful, but at least if you have the Genus and Species names right (assuming the info above is correct) you could find out more. Unfortunately, it seems "Black Cohosh" is listed as common names for both. Good luck! (Where in NJ are you?)
