All, I planted the pictured Yarrow and Speedwell last year, as 3.5" potted perennials.... Currently, the Yarrow is perhaps 3 feet in diameter...the Speedwell maybe 12" or so. Anyway, both flowers are spreading, is the only way I can describe what seems to be happening. It's like the center of each flower is flattening out, as you can see in each picture (hopefully). Is it natural for both to spread-out like this??? If not, what is causing it and how can it be corrected?? As you can probably tell, I have not been gardening very long... Thanks very much, SteveM

I'm not sure if I can help with the flattening out of the flower, as I can't really see it but for whatever it is worth, I bought my house in August 2004 and it had some pretty white flowered yarrow. Next year, it was much taller but still pretty. This year, however, we had unusually high temps early on and it became a tall, tangled mess. I just last month ripped out the whole lot of it. It was just flopping over. Perhaps these plants would benefit from severe pruning (or perhaps replanting them every year or so). Here is a picture of the Yarrow on May 15 of this year. It ultimately went nuts growing very high and looking terrible and floppy so I took it all out:

I don't know which Veronica you have - some are creeping by nature. For the Yarrow two possibilities I can think of: they are getting too little sun, or the soil is too rich (well fertilized). Maybe too much water, too.

I have both plants and I'm also new to gardening. My yarrows in their second year are getting very tall. Some of the varieties are erect and rather confined, however, one in particular (Summerwine) is spreading everywhere. My speedwell (Goodness Grows) is also sort of dieing out in the middle, while there are short bent sprigs around with the flowers on top. I would also appreciate someone's experienced advice.

Some veronicas do that. I don't know of any cure. And some yarrows are very invasive. No cure for that either, except digging them out when they extend beyond their allotted space.

I have had yarrow which I ended up yanking out too. It went crazy in the 3rd year - tall, matted mess. I have not had it for 2 years and again this year it's coming up all over the garden and I am constantly yanking it out. Looks lovely in photos on the seed packet but it does spread like the devil. As for the veronica speedwell - it went crazy too so I split it. Mine was approaching 4' across. This year after a heavy rain is was laid flat. I took a wire plant hoop and bundled it all upright and left it for a couple of days, took the hoop off and it's back to being upright as it should be. I learned of this trick from a fellow gardner. Hope this helps.

That's exactly the year it went nuts on me (the third year). Before that, it was such a nice fluffy thing bordering the left of my front house border. Then..flop. I wish there was something I could do for a chocolate cosmo plant I just had delivered. Small pot, but it's over 2 feet tall and growing horizontally it's so flopped over. I shoved it into a tiny trellis and positione it between 2 tall mums that have high foliage. We'll see.
