Sunday was a great day to visit John Lonsdale's garden. I hadn't been there since spring. It's about a 35 minute drive from my house.

Just a few pictures taken on the slope and in the greenhouse.

Very nice photos, Carol, and very interesting to see such wonderful examples of C. purpurascens growing so well in the open garden. It looks very natural and the growing conditions must be perfect on a slope. The purpurascens in the center of photo 4 is a very nice specimen of a silver shield leaf. In photos 6 we see Arum italicum, a natural companion of C. purpurascens and hederifolium.

Matthias, I like to play tricks! I believe this is Arum savatieri 'Ai Taka' which came from Asiatica. The leaves are small, not much larger than Viola variegata. It does look quite nice with the Cyclamen foliage and this area of the garden is irrigated in summer, I believe.

Very well done, Carol ...

I thought the leaves were a bit short: italicum leaves are longer and narrower

Matthias, you're making me laugh! I think the foliage of those Arums looks superb with Cyclamen.

I selected two photos with unusual plants, or those I find more unusual.

The first picture contains another Asian plant.
Anyone know it? I've collected seed while at John's garden.

Arum italicum is a great plant. My yet-to-be finished winter container has some in it along with other evergreen/winter green plants.

35 minutes away! How lucky you are, I am green with envy.

Tell John his plants are wonderful.

Looks like a nice trip Carol! Is that a Mukdenia? I still can't decide whether to order from Shikoku this year. It would certainly make for a more exciting spring.

Joseph, I'll give you a hint. Here are the spent flowers with seed - the plant family will likely be revealed.

Here's Arum italicum with my first garden planted hederifolium. You can tell there is a pin oak near this!

Carol,

I live only about 30 miles from this garden also. Looks like I'll have to figure out how to get an invite as it looks gorgeous. I love the arums in the winter garden, and have now several different varieties of A. italicum, and have just this fall planted over a dozen different arums, arisaemas and other aroids in my shady areas. I guess A italicum is a pest down south, but think it's a bit more controlled up here.

What's that cyclamen in photo 2? An almost unimaginable leaf design to me.

I had to come back to examine them again, they are just so beautiful. John really has mastered growing them in the garden here in the states. I like the one in photo 3 also, oh heck I like them all.

Your photography skills captured them perfectly Carol.

I'm glad everyone enjoyed the pictures!

George, I believe it's hederifolium in photo 2.
To me, that species has the most diversity in leaf size, patterns and shapes.

The Asian plant in the first picture is Syneilesis , probably S. palmata.
