Leaves seem to be the order of the day. C. alpinum grown from seed collected in Anatolia, Turkey.
C. cyprium
C. cyprium
C. hederifolium collected in Turkey, 2003.
C. elegans, a silver leaved form.

It's funny Ann, because when we saw these hederifolium in Turkey, they seemed to be quite boring and uniform, but now that I have a few here I see that they are quite attractive. The cream border surrounding the dark green central shield is nice and probably makes the leaf stand out.

Tim, that C. hederifolium leaf is fantastic. The different colour "values" or "weights" (deep blue green, screaming white/silver, strongly reduced pewter and lighter dark green) are perfectly balanced in this particular leaf making a very subtle and harmonious combination. Maybe that´s why it may look boring (overall grey) in the wild in masses, but upon closer inspection it reveals great beauty. I often find the same phenomenon when I see masses of leaves and then concentrate on just one of them alone.

Your C. cyprium is a great on but then, I would be happy to have any of them in my collection. Oops! I think I am on my way to having all of them in my collection. . I know I have asked before, but senior moments hit again. How do you tell the difference between C. elegans and some of the similar C. coum that look so similar?

First of all, elegans usually flowers earlier, Terry. C. elegans is in flower here right now, but coum is still budded. The flower of elegans is elongated, whereas the flowers of coum are generally dumpy. Also, elegans usually, but not always, has very small barbels at the mouth of the flower. I will try to take a photo next weekend. A friend of mine, Melvyn Jope, who is a fellow member of the Cyclamen Society showed me this characteristic last autumn. I had never seen it before. The leaf of elegans is much more pointed too - even more so than the plants known as coum caucasicum.

Thanks Tim, I have some pictures that I hope will post well, I will get it done later. I probably have C. coum, but you can confirm when you see it.

Tim, as always, it was a surprise to look over the foliage! the cyprium ( especially the first leaf) is wonderful, the hederifolium looks like the dark center was dusted with sugar , all are remarkable!

All great, but as I mentioned in another thread, I especially love those which look like they were splashed with white paint, i.e. 1,2, and 3. How does alpinum grow? Is it a true alpine requiring very cool summers for good growth? Would it be hardy for outdoor growing in our zones 6 and 7?

George, I treat C. alpinum as I do every other species that I'm able to grow outside. I don't give any special care and it seems happy enough. Perhaps Carol would know how alpinum would do outside for you. I wonder if John Lonsdale has it outside?
