Hello, a problem In the nice book "Cyclamen" from Ch. Grey-Wilson, edition 1997, I found the distribution of purpurascens in the Alpes and south down to the middle of Yugoslavia. But I collected seeds on the greek island Naxos in 1994 from a nearly retracted plant and some years ago it starts flowering and it was a purpurascens. Naxos is far south of the described distribution area. What to do now, correct the book? Berthold

... or send out an expedition of experts and verify its existence there ...

Do you have any photos of the plant, Berthold? It seems very unlikely that C. purpurascens would be present on Naxos. A stray seed from your own plants got into the pot of seeds that you sowed from the Naxos collection maybe? It would be quite a find if this species was found to be growing there, but that whole area has been extensively botanised I think, and I'm sure it would have been found before now. Do you have any photos you took during the 1994 trip, Berthold?

It's unlikely, but perhaps someone is or was cultivating the species there and it has naturalised? It's difficult to know what to say.

Tim, not from the trip but the plant comes tomorrow. At that time I didn't grow cyclamen by seeds so it's improbable to mix the seeds. I have 4 or five plants left from that seeds but only one is correctly labeled in the garden still. The other plants are mixed up with purpurascens from different origins. Berthold

Tim, thats the only plausible explanation for me. See the plant in all items typical for purpurascens:

Well, there is no doubt that we are looking at C. purpurascens, Berthold. Perhaps there is a cyclamen enthusiast living on Naxos...
