I found this growing near two C hederifolium, neither of which it resembles. The leaves don't really look like hederifolium to me - not pointy enough. But my question is, seeing that the markings on the leaves aren't especially attractive, is it worth growing on? Could the leaves look different next year?

Mara, I think that Tim would say yes keep it and I have found that a year old seedling in my little experience does not always tell what the true leaves will be. I would move it and give it another year, but maybe others with more experience will give better advise.

I agree with Terry. The patterns are not obvious until the tuber is mature. Tim warned about giving away seedlings too soon. If you have room, grow them on.

Is that just one plant, Mara? It looks like there could be a few seedlings there. I think they show promise. Do you grow C. purpurascens outside, Mara? I ask because the leaf in the top right of the photo looks different to the rest of the leaves. it looks like it has the small 'pimples' around the leaf margin and the pattern looks like the classic marbling seen often in purpurascens. I'm just curious. It could well be a young hederfolium leaf masquerading as purpurascens!

Tim, anything is possible in my garden... I have had purpurascens, but that was quite a few years ago and the plant has disappeared - or I've lost track of it. I assumed it was only one seedling, but I'll look again tomorrow.

Mara, you should give it another year without disturbing it and see what it really is - I bet on hederifolium. Guess what these little guys are in the coldest, wettest and shadiest spot in my garden below a huge hosta ...
