Cyclamen coum has started to flower here in the garden. This small plant is one of several planted around a couple of Helleborus x ericmithii that I have recently planted on the edge of a gravel path.
The next two photos are of coum I have in the glasshouse which have unusual leaves. The first plant really doesn't resemble coum that much, but it doesn't fit any other species either. The flowers have a solid dark blotch at the base of the petals (no white eye). I think it's just an aberrant form. The second plant could be mistaken for subsp. caucasicum, except that it has the usual stubby flowers of subsp. coum, not the more graceful flowers of the plant known as subsp. caucasicum. Apparently, there are no colonies of the plant known as subsp. caucasicum where all of the plants have heart shaped leaves and slightly more elongated flowers - plants with orbicular leaves and stubby flowers co-exist with them. If this is the case, there is no argument for retaining subsp. caucasicum at the rank of subspecies. Surely it must be regarded as a form only.

I had a problem uploading the photo of the coum I was referring to in the penultimate paragraph, so here goes again:

They're all nice looking plants but that last one is an exceptionally nice plant Tim. It is amazing how full your plants are.

I particularly like that last one, Tim. So far I've had very limited success with coum in the garden. There haven't been any seedlings , probably due to bitter weather ruining the flowers.

Not exactly what I wanted to hear Carol. So I may find that my bed of coum is not going to look as pretty as I had hoped
