24 August 2006/ Last of the potatoes dug today. I had about 30 plants and used the potatoes throughout the summer. The bed is now planted in annual red clover as a cover crop, ready for next year's effort. The cover crop feeds the earthworms during the winter, and worked into the soil in early spring. The clover probably fixes some nitrogen in the soil, and possibly draws nutrients from deeper down for the plants that will be there next year. Additionally it has a more attractive appearance than bare earth.
