This is my first year growing Kohlrabi and Joi Choi. The seeds were direct planted in the garden about 24 May 2007. Today I pulled a few plants and ate them. The rutabago has been grown in the past. These are smaller than the large orange turnip. Sometimes the names are interchanged.
One Kohlrabi was eaten raw and it is comparable to a radish in texture and taste is a cross between a radish and a piece of turnip with a slight taste of mustard. On the whole rather pleasant. Two kohlrabi were steam cooked and garnished with butter and were comparable to a potato cooked in a similar fashion.
The stir fried Joi Choi, common in Chinese Restaurants, was excellent. I used sesame oil and soy sauce for flavour, and it was cooked in less than five minutes. I ate the whole plant- believe it or not.

I can't believe how fast the choi grew for you! For me, it's a winter plant, seeded in October and harvested leaf by leaf through the winter, until it bolts sometime in May. I love chois...you should look for a type called "Ta Tsoi" or "Ta Choi" to try, especially for an early spring planting (very frost resistant)--the leaves are deep green and prostrate, and very tasty!
