I will be getting some seeds for Cosmos Bright Lights in a few days.
When I read up on it the directions said to direct sow it in the Fall or Spring.
I live in zone 7b. Has anyone in that zone ever tried starting them in the fall?

I have them reseeding all over the place, literally. They don't take long to germinate or get large enough to flower. I planted mine originally in the spring a year ago, after starting them inside. I didn't really need to go to all that trouble. If you plant them now, they'll germinate now and reseed forever.

Mary, look and see how long it takes from germination to when the flowers go to seed. If you sow all your seeds in the fall and the plants do not get to the point where they make seeds that fall to the ground, you won't have any plants coming up the following spring. I have had them for five years after planting them one spring. They come back up like weeds from the seeds the plants drop. They even come up in my yard.

I do agree with Kathy though if you plant them now or fairly soon, they should have plenty of time to flower, make seed, the seed will drop, and then germinate again in the spring. You can even collect seed if you wish to start them in new places or trade with other people. Wish I had known you wanted them-I would have gladly sent you some.
