I bought some bulbs at the Boston Flower show last winter and this was one of the results. I don't remember buying this one ! This bulb became a bush with hundreds of yellow flowers that open at night and early morning then close during the day. It is FULL of buds and has never slowed down. Can anyone identify this for me ? Thanks !

and here's the flower:

I believe it is Mirabilis jalapa - Four O'Clocks - Marvel of Peru.

Thank you Cathy and Monique, I believe you must be right because this plant begins to open about 4:00PM and is closed up by late morning.
Here's another question for you:
Is this plant winter hardy in my cold zone 6 ? Or do I need to dig up that bulb ? Thanks.

Suzy
They are definitely Four o'Clocks. They should also have a very strong fragrance. Also, different coloured flowers on the same plant. Mine re-seed like crazy.

Well...Ijust went outside with flashlight in hand to smell the flowers and YES they smell heavenly ! But, as for different colored flowers on the same plant, mine is all yellow, all the time. I found the black seedheads Monique mentioned and I will save seed for next year. Thank you girls !

Suzy, I wonder if a seed might have come with some of your bulbs that started this plant because as others have said you can gather the seed and that is how I started mine. I traded to get the seed for mine and some are just yellow, some are just pink and some look like these.

I posted these in the Garden Gallery but wanted you to see the other colors. I have never gathered the seed so I have something to learn there in a week or so.

Meg, those are simply beautiful ! I looked these up on the web and one site said that some people plant just the tubers instead of seed. I will do both. I wonder if I can get those pinks and multi-colored flowers from a plant that is all yellow ? I doubt it. I'd bet that you have mixed seed. I'll have to send for the mixed seed and see if I can get those beautiful colors ! Wow, that's unusual looking. Thanks for the pictures !

Suzy, I have lots of plants and will try to find the seed. I looked out there just tonight and didn't see how to gather the seed but I will sure keep trying and I will send you some seed if I can get it before it freezes here and ruins the seeds.

If you have lots of flowers, the seeds will be everywhere on the ground - they're fairly big and can be harvested from the flower as well. If the plants are in a somewhat sheltered spot (mine are next to the brick wall of the house) they will also re-seed themselves come spring.

Thanks Patsy, I didn't think to look under the plant but it looks like I should be able to find them.
I love the things I learn here.

Meg, the seed pods are located in the center of the clumps of leaves and look like a pea sized black ball. I was surprised to see how big they were. They almost hide from view, but you can see them in the leaves near the stem. If you have trouble finding them, I can go out and take a picture for you.
Thank you for the offer of seeds ! I would love to have some !

I'm learning something here too. I didn't even look for seed before. I found lots of them so if you'd like me to send some to you just email me, Suzy. I have three colors growing on mine: pink, yellow with pink blotches and white with yellow blotches:

I found the seeds..they are still all green but I will have lots to harvest and share.

SusanQ, you mentioned making a hedge with them in one of your posts and I think that is what I will do next year.
