I'm not into Clematis like some of y'all here, so I don't know anything about them other than what I've learned here. When I bought this one a few months ago and posted a photo of it in it's pot, y'all said it was a nice one.. WELL...where you ever right! Here it is Oct. 26, and it's in it's third flush of bloom!!

You did well whatever it's name!

Yes, Suzy, it's Warsaw Nike, I can't wait to see what she does next year!! That really is that color, I've done nothing to enhance her..

Marie..you got me hooked..
You would be happy to see how I went and looked at everyone and checked and mulched and bid a good late fall and winter to..So that they will come back next year and bloom prolifically.

My Warsaw Nike doesn't have quite as vivid a central red/crimson bar in the middle as yours does.
CotW's has even less of a bar than mine:
http://www.clematis.hull.ac.uk/clemdetail.cfm?dbkey=593

Yet, the Crimson bar closely resembles 'Star of India' in this picture....
http://www.clematis.hull.ac.uk/clemdetail.cfm?dbkey=428

and then there is my Warsaw Nike....The slight bar you see here disappears after only a few days and the entire flower turns to the same purple color:

Also, my Warsaw Nike was done blooming a month ago and CotW lists July, Aug, Sept. as bloom time. I'm surprised that yours is blooming now. There are SO MANY purples with bars of Crimson that it is always difficult to pinpoint the exact hybrid. But, I will stand corrected if this is what your tag says, even though I have little faith in tags ! After you see them both, you will see why I thought of Star of India. I am looking for this one locally, but with no luck, so far.
Your picture is lovely. Often, I see quite a degree of variation among the same cultivars in color, so this makes it even more difficult to identify similar hybrids, especially the dark purple Hybrids whose numbers are many.
I understand that many experts loathe identifying purples, lol. Have I confused everyone with my logic ? Probably.

Suzy, that's what the tag says.. I bought three of them, all have the same tag...that being said.. we all know how accurate tags can be sometimes. I'm a complete novice at Clematis, so tags are all I have to go on. We bought them in June, some where already covered in flowers. I put them in the ground two weeks ago, and the one in the photo has just gone crazy.. I swear it seems to have grown 4' in the last two weeks and put on lots of buds.. This was taken right after I bought her..in June..

Blooming, whatever it is, I love it. If it's not Warsaw Nike, it's likely still a group 3.
The CotW link for Star of India didn't work in my previous post, so I'll try again...Hope it works now.

Then there's my WN... I thought Warsaw Nike was a wine-purplish and that is why I got her to match my wine-purplish door color. I am surprised to see your deep purple versions. Mine is only in her first year however. Maybe she will change. (did your logic cover that variation too Suzy???) This picture is a tad more red than the reality was.

Wendy, I give up ! They're all different, lol. Now, I'm as confused as can be because yours looks like Niobe, see below:

http://www.clematis.hull.ac.uk/clemdetail.cfm?dbkey=27

Maybe W.N. is extremely variable. That's the only logic I have left !

that is quite ironic about your Niobe statement. I have Niobe in the front of the house to go with that door. I always had felt that either one would go with the door color. I'll be able to compare them better next year.

Your clematis is so beautiful Blooming! And the growth must be extraordinary! I must tell you I bought a Warsaw Nike this Fall (remembered yours) and it's your fault, I mean it's thanks to you! Here is a late September-picture of my Star of India! I'm sure it'll contribute to the general confusion.

Here I show pictures of my Warzaw Nike. It seems more red (like on the CotW page) but i do think this is because this is a very difficult colour to present and it is strong varying with the lighting conditions.

Mine bloomed the same color as Ingmarie's. It sure was prone to mildew but maybe that's because it was near Recta in containers and Recta got mildew real bad this year.

Blooming, Consider the texensis Duchess of Albany as a good buy for your zone. I'm in the same zone and it did quite well here, no "crispy critter" leaves like so many of the Type 2's.

Katie.. thanks for the info about 'Duchess of Albany' I will be looking for her. As for WN.. I love all your different versions of her.. maybe it is the growing conditions.. I don't know, lets see what she looks like next year..either way, she's a lady with a mind of her own!!

Wow! You are so lucky. Mine had a few blooms and quit. Hardly any new growth either although it looks fine. Duchess of Edinburgh (the supposedly finicky one), on the other hand is acting like your WN.

Just a short note.. When we got back from Vacation, there had been two freezes here(in the mid 20s) Imagine my shock when I found that WN had 20 healthy blooms on her. I just can't wait to see what she does next year!!

I planted this clem, but it didn't make it. Or maybe I left it in the pot and trusted hubby to water while I was gone.

But anyway, I bought it for its purple fuschia blooms. Maybe it'll show up where I planted it, but I'm not holding my breath. I'll just have to get another one. Oh, the garden nurseries love that!
