Yesterday I traveled to the town of Exeter Ontario (Canada) to visit a friend and she took me to see the unique species of squirrels that habitat this area that are snowy white!

They aren't albino but are a white morph of the more common Gray Squirrel. (Black Squirrels are also a morph of the Gray Squirrel but in black.) These white ones are far less common and are found in only a few areas of North America. They are under protection by special laws and many nature tourists come to this town to see them.

It I were going to give her a name it would be "Snowball" for sure! I paid her "peanuts" for taking her photo, but she didn't mind! ;-)

Thanks Carol! I have heard about these fellows but didn't remember the town's name! Maybe we will visit some day soon, whenever there's a moment!
People are always astonished to see our black squirrels. To me they are just squirrels...but if you are from Europe, you fnd them quite exotic.

Now to find Exeter on a map...

Hi Gardenbug! Here's a link with more info:
http://www.cdosworm.com/exeter.html
Exeter is on Hwy 4 just 30min N. of London, but find it on the map first, as you may have a more direct route from your area. They have a very impressive Horticultural Society in that area and a good time to visit I think would be in the gardening season. The plantings in the park were wonderful even at this time of year.

So true about the black squirrels-we are so used to them but I remember a pal from England being quite amazed and finding them quite exotic!

Here's one of those little tulip bulb eaters. ;-)

I find even the black squirrel exotic as I've never seen one. Ours are all red or brown. DD was at her dad's a couple of weeks ago and saw a black squirrel for the first time and he only lives about 50 miles away.

DH's uncle Clyde taught me this little verse:

How do you spell squirrel?
skwee, double skwee, wigible wigible whirl. squirrel.

That is just something else. Great picture! Either would be exotic around here, we only have the common gray ones. There are black squirrels in my DH's home town in Michigan - I didn't believe him until I saw them.

That is really cute, Marie! I laughed out loud and nearly woke up the house! Although I am not a big fan of "tree rats", the white ones are sorta cute. But they are still vermin in my backyard!

Hi Carol, What neat shots of the white and black squirrels. Very neat! So happy they don't live in my yard!

Adorable! We have gray and red squirrels. They feed at our bird feeder but generally leave my garden alone.

The fur on the white one looks so soft! Only grey squirrels
here but I've seen red ones in northern Wisconsin.
