I've no idea what this is, it doesn't look real, but it's on the underside of a dogwood leaf.

I think it's a moth cocoon. I was reading that moths spin their cocoons with silk. Butterflies have what is called a chrysalis which is simple part of the caterpillars skin. So this may be a moth.
