Some very basic notes about sowing seed, may be of interest to anyone not familiar with, or out of practise with, sowing seeds.

Brain, what a great job! Your pictures are great. I wasn't sure about the size of the gravel but now I am. Thanks for posting the new info.

Actually Katie the gravel in the photos is at the upper limit of what I myself normally use, I do usually use smaller still. But it's adequate.

Once again Brian, your information is superb. I use your site as my bible and just used it today, in fact. I had planted Crispa last month and today I noticed a large and strange looking seedling emerging. I doubted that it could possibly be Crispa this soon, since checking your germination times on your site. I think I must have a weed, so will likely pull it and put the pot back into my cool basement. Your site is so helpful and the germination times are a great tool! Thanks again !

I have a quick question - I've tried sowing seeds inside the house each spring (clematis and others) in 3 inch pots, used no damp, and then put them in to freezer bags - but the pots always grow that horrible green mold on them. Is there anyway to prevent this, and is there anyway to get rid of this when it happens?

Deusex, I would try sterile soil specifically for seed planting which is sold at most nurseries. However, I have also found that I can use my own non-sterile potting mixture, only if I use a good liquid fungicide at 1/2 strength, soaking the planted pots very well, then draining them before putting the pots into plastic bags to germinate. This stops the mold and fungus.

The fine gravel on top is a big help too I find. I bought it at a pet shop where it is sold for aquariums.
My seeds are in the garage now, having just been planted recently. They will remain there for 3 months, then come indoors.
Those planted last January are slowly emerging now. Some have the green grunge on them (I didn't use gravel last year) but it seems to make no difference. Seedlings break through the surface either way.

Thank you. Last year I threw out a bunch of pots with the green stuff on them. I figured there was no way the seedlings would survive with that green stuff on the top. Guess I'm going to start sowing my seeds now - i need to do something now that I can't work outside.

Deusex...I just planted more seed this morning! Great activity on a -5 gloomy day. It is a long process, and yes, sometimes you feel you are babysitting mud cubes with green frosting, but the excitement when they germinate is worth it!

Bug, that is so funny! muc cubes with green frosting! Even more so it that I have planted some seeds in used Betty Crocker's frosting containers. lol

Well, I have to brag, we have a 45 degree day yesterday for Boise. Not the norm, but my norm. Yippee! I worked out in my front flower bed where I've got Climbing Polka and several beautiful irises that need to be separated and moved our more or to another place. I have tulips that come up too.

But they are all getting crowded and the rose bush is way too vigorous for this spot in front of our south facing brick facade between two windows.

Also, I wanted to improve the soil to make it more loamy and easy to pull out the quake grass. What a Night Mare. I will seriously round up in spring when the temps are warmer.

Dug up the tulips while doing the irises, so they need to be divided and replanted away from the rose bush closer to the edge of the flower bed.

Trimmed more of this climbing rose and trimmed suckers. Shredded paper to add to garden beds. Cleaned out my David's Pond filter. Added more water to it and fish are happy, will add salt to it today as our temps will be 45 again. Yippee!

I got your seeds Bug, in my looking for the christmas tree lites or maybe more stuff to add to my compost pile I found a whole stack of 4 inch or 3 1/2 " square pots to plant these seeds in and also be ready for the future germinations of the others. So my saving worked good for me.
