I have two blue Atragenes growing against a new trellis this year. The tree against which they used to grow has been removed.
There are bulbs planted around their bases. I would like to plant a rose between the two clematis so as to have a more extended period of colour interest and perfume too if possible. Does anyone have suggestions for roses for this situation...that are not red or pink? Nearby are mostly blue, white and yellow flowers. This is a cold site which is USDA zone 4. Names I have come across are: Sweet Juliet, Sally Holmes, Penelope, Morden Sunrise, JP Connell, Henry Hudson and Felicia. My concern is having colour and yet being able to prune the die back of the rose each spring without harming the clematis. Any thoughts?

Not Sweet Juliet if it is a cold site! I think you should try one or two of your beautiful and hardy Canadian roses. I'm in raptures over a very special garden I saw this summer: Hundreds of clematis together with rhododendrons and dwarf or semi dwarf conifers. Very special and marvelous.... So I'm going to replant two borders next spring because roses and clematis have nothing to recommend them in the autumn and winter. And some of my roses die every winter due to the climate.

I don't know about the hardiness but I love both Sally Holmes and Penelope. They've both been strong growers and have mostly healthy foliage which is important to me as I don't spray. I'm sure you must need a Penelope in your garden.

I love Apricot Beauty or I think it was Orange. Perfect color for those clems! I'll get the name more accurate.

I have seen 2 photos of Penelope that are widely different. One shows a pale yellow, the other blush pink. Help!

I'm partial to 'Rugelda', myself. I'ts a yellow rugosa, the petals just tipped with a red blush.

Thanks for the suggestion Barb, I found it in my book, a repeat flowering rose too. The photo is a very bright orangy yellow but the text says "light yellow". Beautiful form.

My Penelope is creamy yellow with a touch of apricot in the buds.

Sally Holmes is a great single rose. It can be grown as a shrub rose or a climber. It will 'go with' any color clematis. Unfortunately, I lost mine due to stem rot. It is a healthy grower.

My wishlist has "Fair Bianca" as a creamy white, own roots, disease resistant,Canadian grown. Not sure why it got on my wishlist, but maybe a candidate for your situation.

I just love my new Grand Prize that I bought this summer. I think it would beautiful. You can see it by clicking on My Garden. It's the first photo. The only thing is I don't know yet how it will come through the winter.

I love white in my garden, but this spot needs colour. So this time I am looking for yellow or apricot tones I think. I love your Grand Prize and will try to research it a bit and add it to my list. This is getting so complicated...but fun! So many of the roses are lacking information I need on the sites I am checking: things like height, zone, photos, time of bloom, etc.

Gardenbug, here is a wonderful site for information on hundreds of roses with pictures. I love this site, although their roses never survive for me as they are too young and small, but their information is wonderful ! I also have their catalog which I keep as a perfect reference: http://www.heirloomroses.com/express/ Hope this helps ! Suzy
