Amazing!! I had a quick wander around the garden tonight at sunset; I noticed (even though it is late November) a bloom in the process of opening and suddenly realised, 'Hang on, there is no cream-coloured clematis here!' I traced the vine back to the ground and realised my Daniel Deronda has produced a 'sport', here it is, plus the normal flowers from this spring:
I very careful traced the vine back to the origin. I've never had a 'sport' before. Hopefully the mild weather will continue over the next day or so, then the flower should be able to open fully!

Thrilling! Your 'sport' is not at all like its parent and has a very marked under surface! Due to the very late flowering season? Look forward to see more pictures!

Neat, Brian, and in checking on Daniel's parentage - "Fortunei x patens) x lanuginosa" -- I can see how you get such a neat sport. This is exciting!!! I have not had a sport that I know of in my clematis, either, but do have a luscious one in my roses. Yes, as Karalyn voiced, am looking forward to seeing it open. C. lanuginosa can be pale lilac to white -- maybe that is what you have. Hope you take the cutting and root it.

Oh WoW, that's exciting ! Please tell us how you can separate a "sport" safely from the parent for propagation. Would you wait until the spring and try cuttings ? This is so unusual, that we want to hear what you will do with this sport ! Suzy

So near, and yet...we had our first proper frost last night, -5C. That's ice on the sepals, at 8 this morning. Maybe tomorrow. http://www.btopenworld.com/weather Suzy, I'm not sure, yet. I'll have to see what happens over the next few days.

Maybe today? Or tomorrow.

I'm not that confident of waiting myself. If this happened on one of mine, I'd be taking the cutting now instead of waiting. Our winds do so much to "prune" my clematis that I'd have no confidence this portion would remain intact by next Spring. Please keep us updated. This is so interesting!

Brian, it is looking very interesting! I just can't wait to see it open all the way! Please, clemmy, please open for us. We admit we are truly addicted to the mighty clematis and we have to get our fix!

Brian, it is happening -- don't you just LOVE the shadings!! You have such a gift for mystique. I love murder mysteries and how they unfold little by little -- you are doing that to us now. Don't you dare stop! We want to read the end of this story!

Poor thing - it really is doing its best, but if the weather up with you is anything like it is with us I really don't blame it for not unfurling. I didn't feel much like unfurling myself this morning. Good luck with the emergency measures, whatever they may be.

Brian, could it be possible your clematis has a lack of color due to cold weather. Sometimes cold weather has an influence on flower color. Hopefully your branch will not freeze to deep, so you can take some cuttings. Than these cuttings will prove next year whether this is a new sport or just a joke of nature. Very interesting. Last tuesday I visited Mr Westphal in Germany and he told me some years double flowers occurred when he had a very long though not very cold winter. This sounded very interesting to me. He found this in his Ville de Lyon, Piilu and others I forgot the name of. We will see what happens next year. Keep us informed about this. Kind regards, Zeger.

Zeger, true? double flowers in Ville de Lyon? Oh, I love her, and to think of her with double flowers. Smashing!!! So far our winter hasn't been below zero, so maybe we'll have more doubles this next year. Interesting how that goes. And as Spider said he had yet to see his Patricia Ann Fretwell bloom double (but that was last year), I hope he posts if she has changed her mind yet and flounces about his garden in a double tutu!
