Well I finally got some of my Columbine seed planted today. I used Promix BX with about 7% playground sand in small styrofoam trays. They will be set out in the cool of my leanto on the barn for a few weeks and then off we go!
Sorry the focus is poor as my batteries were nearly done!
There were 4 from Richard H in England, 3 from Mike in Chicago, 1 Dwarf Blue Alpina collected in town, and 5 from calla1023 (Ebay). The last five are a year old so hope they still have energy to germinate. I still have another group I would like to plant (About 13) but will see maybe I will plant outdoors. Seeds from Richard are from a breeder down the road from him and are mostly dark blue doubles or raspberry red/white tips. Mike's seed is from plants on his thread previous in this forum. Seed from calla1023 are A. x hybrida "Royal Purple", A. x cultoram "Danish Dwarf", A. flabellata var. pumila "Kurilensis Rosea", A. viridiflora "Choclate Soldier", and A. x hybrida "Sunlight White". Some of these had so few seeds (last five) so I am hoping for at least 1 plant. I like the soil mix because they don't need to be transplanted right away. And this mix has some good food in it as well. http://www.hort.purdue.edu/hort/facilities/downloads/proMixBX.pdf Last photo is of the plant lights in my shop.

They look so neat and orderly, Clayton...seeds are funny aren't they? I've had seeds that are years old come up accidentally, let alone from the type of TLC you're giving them. Looking forward to your pics down the road.

Darn. I clicked on this thread hoping to see plants - sort of desperate for green during this cold, winter-like spring. From what I remember, columbine seeds germinate best when fresh, otherwise they prefer some warm/cold combo, though with diminished germination rates. I'll be happy to supply some additional seed this spring/summer for experiment!

I will be bringing them in from their cool spot next week so I am sure they will germinate fine as I have had them stored in the cool since I received them. I was quite surprised to see some Balloon Flower seeds germinate from last year ahead of the fresh seed I got a few weeks ago! Clayton
