Just a question? I 'm sure I can read this somewhere but I like the help we get and give here. What methods can you use for vegetative propagation rather then seeds with the Columbine ie cuttings, division or ? Clayton

Cmmwiebe, I'm not sure on this one, maybe cloning?? I have never tried to divid ours as I'll I have seen is one plant, unless there has been a seed drop next to the Mom. But them that isn't the same, they could be close? Maybe someone else can answer that one?

Clayton, aquilegias are taprooted plants, with one, single, very deeply buried main root. You can't divide them. This is also the reason they resent being transplanted unless they are fairly young. I don't know anything about trying root divisions, but it doesn't seem like the kind of plant that would take to this (unlike fleshy rooted plants like acanthus, etc.).

Just a couple more. Astrid, see the little yellow things/anthers that is where you will find the pollen and you need to find the stigma on the plant you are going to pollinate.
This one is our all time favorite. Yes the spurs are over 3" long. Will try to get a better shot of her when she isn't being blown by the wind.

Those are great, thanks! The root system in the second photo looks more like a daylily but I have not dug up too many to see mature plants. I'll let you know when they arrive, can't wait!

She is not gone but in the fall I would love to move our big plant so at that time I'll see if I can divide her if folks are interested?

Well this little one surprised us all and turned a deeper shade. She is up for grabs if you live in the States.
